2 x GTX 580 or wait for 6 series

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 2:03 pm

Fianlly built new pc, need graphics card

Should I buy 2 x GTX580 1.5gb in SLI or wait till october and see if new 6 series is out?

PC is i7 2600k
ddr3 32gb 2133
ssd 240 ( ocz vertex 3)
mobo has dual x 16 SLI support

GTX590 gets too hot for my liking.
ATI cards are too loud with exhausts (in past experience)

Connected to Sony 40inch TV single display no 3d

Obviously will run game but want it to look best with high frame rate and play future games. My PS3 is not graphically superior any more.

PC cost small fortune but should last 5 years?

I would wait...unless you're planning to play like another game.

32GB of ram at 2133? What kits are you using? If you're spending that money on ram you should probably just buy the 580s now and re sell them then the 600's come out.

Overkill if u ask me. My gt220(yuk) can prob run it at 20-50+ fps so why even bother considering it built for current gen consoles.
Course unless you mod outa ass then a dif story.

mushkin redline 2133 9-11-10-28

surely resale on used graphics cards would mean a huge loss in money?

Buy one GTX580 3gb, then wait until you actually need a second. Granted you have a large display but i think one 580 would be fine. Also at the end of the year when the new stuff comes out the current GPUs will receive a price cut.

SLI gtx 580 is just overkill if you don't play in 3d, I think.

ok so save money and just get one 580? Basically I dont want to throw money at machine for few years so should I buy now or wait.

one 580 saves £300 so sounds good if you believe it would be enough

I doubt they would ever go below $400 from their $500 price now, not too large of a loss if you're even considering buying these cards not to mention how much the 600 series cards will be.

If you are only running a single monitor at 1920x1080 then even a single GTX 580 is overkill.....

As above, I wouldn't bother with the SLI right now.. I doubt you will run into any games within the next 3-4 years that will need more power than a single card right now. Next generation consoles won't be out until late 2015, and all games are going to either have to drastically optimize, or keep scaled back if they are multiplatform releases. Witcher 2 all maxed out is about the only game I can think of that puts my single GTX570 1280MB GDDR5 through any kind of pressure.

If you want to enhance your games with 8x SSAA (supersampling antialiasing) & still play them with decent framerates, or running games on a 30'' (2560x1600) 2 gtx 580 might be useful.
I would advise you to look at benchmark tests from several trusted hardware testing magazines.
Look what you need.
I personally will buy a new gpu when new consoles are out.

Well thats what I thought but then I thought each new game pushes more so now witcher maxed out may strain but in a year several games could. Then each year after fps drops on new games.

I also thought would two 580 sli be bottlenecked by processor?.

Man this is rubbish, I just want a good recomendation on a GPU.

Thanks for all replies I am thinking over all advice so far.

What res is Ur tv? It could be 100", but if the res is low it doesn't matter. My 42" plasma is 720p, and I forget the exact res but obviously it's not 1920x1080 like my much smaller 23" led monitor. Your tv is at most 1920x1080, and you wouldn't need 2 580s for any games out now, nor do I think in the near future. Why not buy a 570, wait 2 years, and buy a 7 series?

Get one 580 it will last you a good 3 years before it starts gettin a hint of lag on max settings on the majority of games then you can just Sli when that times comes and good for another year or two

If you're staying with one 1080p display you only need 1.5gb.

Course I'm sure some mods will drag it down but by then those cards will be cheap as hell. Unless you MUST keep with the Joneses. I wouldnt worry bout it. Depends on your budget, If you can afford then go for it, but if not then [censored] it.

Only PC exclusive games are likely to be able to take advantage of all that power and honestly... even then, the difference for me of 60fps vs 120fps isn't great enough to justify the extra expense. You might run into 3 games in the next 3 years that you might have to turn down shadows or have less AA.... other than that everything until 2015 is likely to be ultra high max settings with just a single card.

Yeah but whats the difference in price why not pay a little more and get twice the amount?

Last time I had ATi it was really loud, granted it was when directx10 was released but I would prefere a quiet card as PC is near silent.

I dont wanna argue bout which is better, I found supporters for each online but in my limited experience ATI exhausts kick out some noise.
