I started the day by stumbling upon a blood dragon attacking a bandit fort north of Whiterun. I watched from behind some rocks as it took down bandit after bandit. When it finally turned its attention to me I called Odahviing to my aid. I witnessed a dragon on dragon dogfight during a thunderstorm with epic music playing, but that's not even the interesting part of this story. The blood dragon crash landed near an undiscovered farm. When I delivered the final blow (jumping on a dragon's head while Odahviing roars fire behind you FTW) I decided to check out the farm to see if anyone had been killed. Inside the farmhouse, I discovered a book called "The Woodcutter's Wife." Creepy stuff. For shiggles I decided to head down to Falkreath and search the nearby forests for any signs of this tale.
Once at Falkreath, I slept at the inn until nightfall. Once it was dark, I set off into the woods. I stumbled upon a road and decided to follow it. There I am, walking down the dark road, listening to owls and whatnot, thinking what would happen if I actually found the woodcutter's wife. "STOP!" I about jumped out of my chair, an argonian thief had snuck up behind me and demanded valuables. I told him he was wasting my time and we duked it out blade to blade. When I delivered the killing blow, I heard a Khajiit voice mutter something to my right. Turn around and see that M'aiq the Liar had been standing just off the side of the road watching the fight. He walked over to me and started doing his thing. As we were talking over the corpse of the thief, something transparent passed between us at an extreme pace!
By the time I canceled the conversation, this transparent thing was far, far down the road. I sprinted until my stamina ran out then used whirlwind sprint until I caught up. As I got closer, I could see that the thing was a horse, even closer still there appeared to be a man riding it! When I finally got along side it, I discovered it was a freaking headless horseman! Aghast, and kind of giddy, I decided to follow it up the road a ways. A minute or so later I see spouts of flame in the distance, then figures engaged in a raging battle. The horseman thundered through the middle of this battle and nobody seemed to notice. It was a group of Thalmor Justicars engaging a troop of Stormcloak soldiers. I arrived just as the last Stormcloak fell. The Talmor then turned to me, blades drawn, corpses scattered along the road, and demanded I turn around. Then they charged, and I took on all four.
When the dust settled, all four were dead, fallen against the bodies of the Stormcloaks they just killed. The road looked like a warzone (because it was). I decided to continue along the road in the direction the horseman had gone. A little ways down I discover a cabin that looks to have belonged to a woodcutter. Remembering the book and my purpose for being in these woods, I was pretty excited. I entered the cabin and noticed immediately it was making strange ambient sounds. Searched around the upper floor, then descended the staircase to look downstairs. Got pulverized by a bandit marauder. I reloaded the save, fought her until I took significant damage, then used my nifty little pause button (aka Ice Form) to heal up. It was an intense fight, but I ended up victorious.
When I looked down to loot her body, I noticed that the bookcase she was splayed against had dust blowing away from where it met the floor. This was accompanied by a whistling sound. Suspicious indeed, I decided to look around for anything that would move the bookcase. I used FUS RO DA first, but when the baskets blew away I saw a button tucked behind them. Interesting. Sure enough, the bookcase swung open and revealed a cavern packed with bandits. The bandits apparently attack Khajiit caravans that pass by the cabin. In the end I fought the leader (who had an interesting story written in notes) which lead to a treasure room!
The sun was just beginning to rise as I exited the cabin.
DL;DR A dragon on dragon dogfight lead me to a book, which lead me to the forests of Falkreath at night. I got the [censored] scared out of me by a thief, killed him in front of an onlooking M'aiq the Liar. A headless horseman interrupted our conversation and lead me to a battle between Thalmor and Stormcloaks. I killed the Thalmor, found a suspicious cabin, and ended up in a treasure room.
Have you had anything like this happen?
