HALP! ! I would like to play Fallout (DXDIAG included)

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 11:37 am

I can watch the introductory cinematics. Then the game crashes to the desktop.

I bought the game on Steam. My other steam games all work fine. I just re-downloaded it from Steam so it *should* be the latest patch version.

I know I'm not the only person having this problem. Please help me to fix this (or tell me who to talk to to get my money back).

Thanks.

I would also like to have some help, but no one responded in my thread yet..
We been sitting her for five hours trying to fix the game working, but with no results. And we tried everything.

The only thing I'm starting to think now is that on some PC it work, and on someones it don't. End of. If that was the case, shouldn't it be a warning?
I'm so devastated, been looking forward to this game for so long :(

Good luck with getting help and make your game run!

It seems that the majority of complaints involve people who do not take standard game-playing orecautions, and do not follow any regimented procedures to trouble shoot their problems. There is a new article you can look at that covers the normal precautions, the useful diagnostics, etc.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1144076-some-trouble-shooting-assistance/

Incidentally, for those of you offshore from the states, we are having a long holiday from last Thursday though this evening, so the number of us who might be at home to read the mail here is way down. It is always way down on any weekend, of course, but it is even moreso at this time.

Do you see anything in particular in my DXDIAG that you would flag as a possible source of the trouble?

Have you tried updating your video card drivers. Try downloading the latest catalyst drivers.
Also check your motherboard and soundcard drivers too.

Have you tried a clean boot?
clean boot link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

When windows loads confirm that your start-up items and services are off (some programs like zonealarm cannot be disabled in a clean boot without goingg into the application and telling it not to load).
Just try step 1 and see if the game loads.

I've updated my drivers, and done a clean reboot. No change.

The one thing I find of interest is that the version of the game (which I purchased on Steam) is marked as 32 bit fallout and I'm on 64 bit windows. There is no option for downloading a 64 bit version that I can see.

Not really. It says FalloutNV has stopped working in a dialogue box. It doesn't name the problem in particular.

Got the same issue, win7 64 bit with asus gtx470 graphics card, runing drectx11. I found that if I update my graphics driver to the latest, the game will launch after the cinematics, one time, and if I restart the computer, the only way to get it to run again is to upgrade the drivers again, even though I am installing the same drivers. Not a convienient thing, I tell you. Have done this about three, four times. The last time I tried the uninstall old drivers option, and the game ran, once. There's a message that briefly flashes on the screen right before the game pretends to launch, hard to catch, but I think it's saying that it's incompatible with the 64 bit version of windows, but if that were so, it would not run at all. I think the issue is lack of directx11 support, and that the game realizes there is an issue and crashes, but that does not explain why it runs at all after the initial installation of the latest drivers, and it doesn't explain why some folks running graphics cards that do not support directx11 are having troubles. I do suspect that those troubles are different than the ones we have encountered.

Cannot remember if a clean boot does not load codecs, but you can also try disabling your codecs: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35868

Thank you.

I'm not sure why we are being asked to post a DXDIAG to this topic. No one has referenced it.

There's honestly only so much under the hood tinkering I should be expected to do to play a video game. I haven't tried to disable codecs but I have followed every other suggestion in this thread and the general advice in other threads on the issue, to absolutely no effect.

I think my next move will be to ask Steam Customer Service for a refund.

If that doesn't work, I honestly wonder if this would be an appropriate case for a class action lawsuit. I'm sure it would be challenging (there's probably some boilerplate language in the purchase contract that says we as customers have no right to a decent working product) but not impossible.

In my experience that has always been one of the "joys" of PC gaming. :)

Try and give it a final shot and unload all of the codecs you can - you have a lot of them, and the game does not like codecs at all.

Patches and small errors are an unavoidable part of PC Gaming. I'm not new to it. This is truly egregious, though.

Dxdiags are essential but mostly as information to help troubleshoot the cause (it shows a list of drivers , codecs, motherboard manufacturer, cpu type, etc). Most of this information isnt posted and I always laugh at people who jsut post
Im crashing please fix it and thats all they post. Most people fail to read the stickies also which provide alot of information about what info to post when posting a problem as well as missing the fact that these forums arent even for
official troubleshooting. Its simply gamers helping gamers.

Now rather than just trying things what would be helpful is a memory dump (even a mini-dump). If that is an avenue you want to try then maybe we can try it. If the crash happens often you can attach a debugger to it to try and catch the crash
and write out a memory dump. Debugdiag is one of the programs that can do this. If you want to try bethesdas official tech support Ill post some of that info below.

Please note that these forums are not used for official technical support. Rather, we plan to use it to provide updated information and allow dialog between gamers to solve common problems, such as the most common problem of video or sound card drivers (or a lack of updated ones).

For technical and customer support, please call 410-568-3685, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, visit support.gamesas.com or email support@gamesas.com.

Not really. It says FalloutNV has stopped working in a dialogue box. It doesn't name the problem in particular.

Click windows logo
Goto Control Panel
Goto System and Security
Goto Administrative Tools
Click double click on Event Viewer (wait for it to load)
Under the box labeled "administrative events" click on the + beside "error"--- -- depending on how you have Win7 setup it may also be listed under "Custom Views"(left side)
Look for Falloutnv.exe or Falloutnv or an ERROR message relating to it.
Double click on the event it will open a new window
Click on the error and where it says copy - copy and paste it here -- gobldy gook and all.

Unfortunately 0xc0000005 is a typical crash that everyone is getting. What you need is a crash dump to anolyze.
If you want to try this Ill give the dump a look. Ill message you my email address let me know.
You can use debugdiag to get this.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=28bd5941-c458-46f1-b24d-f60151d875a3&displaylang=en

Its not too hard to get a crash dump from here. Install the program "as admin" by right clicking. Then run it again "as admin".
If the wizard (select rule type) pops up, you want to run fallout 3 nv before proceeding. Afterwards, select crash->a specific process->FalloutNV.exe.
On the next wizard screen you want to select exceptions at the bottom. On the first chance exception screen select add exception.
Find c0000005 (access violation) and select mini-userdump from the action type drop-down menu. Click OK and finish out the wizard.
You should see your rule listed in the rules tab. The status should e active and the userdump count 0. Simply go into the game and get it to crash.
After the crash the userdump count should be set to 1. A minidump file is created jsut follow the path listed under user dump.
The mini-dump should be a small file (~200 KB more or less). You can upload the contents of the user dump directory and the text file from the previous directory (should look like falloutnv_pid_...)
to my email and Ill give it a look.

You fellers go on ahead, I'll catch up on y'all in a bit. It's interesting that our data are similar. I believe that the 1.2.0.285 item is the version of the game, at least that's what shows in my display window of the settings at the options screen, which is supposed to be the version. I didn't know that the version was that high after one patch. Seriously, I kind of understand the dump thing, but most of it hit the wall behind me about three feet over my head. Please let me know if this leads anywhere useful, and if you need me to give it a try for comparison purposes.

Sorry. Delayed. and I can't make the debugger work. It's in anolysis only mode and your directions don't work. More later when I have time for this. Just giving you a heads up that I haven't just disappeared.

Did you download the debugdiag (x86) version? The x64 version is anolysis only. I noticed the installation on my computer put an anolysis only shortcut on my start menu but not the shortcut for the debug.
Look in the installation directory. C:\Program Files (x86)\DebugDiag <-- It should be debugdiag.exe
