2 handed melee is harder than archery and magic?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 10:50 am

You dont need to block or parry when using any kind of melee in Skyrim unless your build is terrible. You don't even have to abuse Smithing and Enchanting for it to be easy mode.

Whats some examples of your strategy then to turn any mode into easy mode?

For melee, I've been dual wielding from the start. But I will use a bow when sneaking to soften them up, or kill them before they can get in range.

EDIT: Just getting rid of some typos.

Two handed is the best and coolest style. Only problem are those frost mages that slow you down to 2 MPH!!!

it's the best until you realize you're a stealth build, and don't get sneak bonuses with 2h :P

thanks for the comments guys, i will stick to 2 handed. But any tips against dragons, giants, mammoths, those bandit chiefs and the centurion as a 2 handed melee combat? I need about 10 swings to get a giant down and the giant basically 2 hit ko me.

just realised i am wearing light armor. Prob is i disliked the ingame heavy armors except daedric but i cant craft it yet. Currently using the assassin's creed armor mod for light armor.

Lol, okay no that will just get you killed with these fellas. Like I said before, beware your surroundings. With giants and what not it takes a while to bring em down two handed because you move slow while swinging and you need to be quick on your feet. So really, its all about the way you maneuver. Hit and run attacks. And when running for the love of Talos sheath your sword!

As you go up in levels be sure to invest in the two handed perks that give more critical strikes and the quick reflexes from block tree.

You need to think tactics. You need to cause a distraction. And you need to have alot of health potions and other things such as resist fire magic (for flame dragons etc) and things like aversion to fire if you have an enchanted fire sword.
Basically, anything to maximize your defence and offence. A follower really helps for distractions and chipping away and giving you a chance to heal or get in a good power attack from behind your foe. If you feel you need to use some archery on the side then go ahead if you feel it doesn't break your role play for two handed.

If you have shouts. Use em as often as possible. Any dirty trick you can think of is good for a two hander up against something big. You can only deal damage up close and personal so you have to be tactical. Even if it means casting fury on a fox or stealing a horse and bringing it to the fight.

A sword that drains stamina or absorbs health will be a great help for you too.

I believe there is a book in the game that gives tips on melee combat. I can't remember what its called but its right there in the Helgen keep.

Wrong. You get 2x sneak attack with two handed. Worth buying the Muffle spell tome and you get lots of sneak attacks as two handed. Also from the Illusion magic school comes 'Calm'. Awesome for an easy sneak attack.

Not a problem with a sword enchanted with damage magika or lightening.
Armour enchanted with resist frost. Resist frost potions. Perhaps start with unrelenting force? *shrugs*

Mixed Unit Tactics?
Yeah thats the one. Thanks

No offense to the OP, but this sounds like another one of those complaints about how a certain aspect of a game is too hard, when in reality, it's just a matter of the player not knowinng how to use that aspect properly.

It`s pretty much as Arkay and bathead says...

It`s all about getting used to a different way of combat as with all things. I love two handed sword fighting, but then I`ve always loved playing the `Conan` type fighting face-to-face. I don`t like staying at the back. I actually never use magic except scrolls which I find annoying and takes ages to cast (I learned that the hard way first time) and archery is only slightly easier than magic. You can also parry quite effectively- If you remember to.

The key thing is to think ahead. wheh you make a strike be aware that you`ll be carried by inertia and if you miss, you`ll shoot pass the guy, so swings are often good moves to avoid that until you learn how your sword affects you.

Nobody ever said being a footsoldier was easy, we must take on the aggro, grit and pain up close and you WILL be hurt- Alot! This is why I tend to view mages and archers as `cowardly` (in a role play character way)

Cause they hide behind the meatshields? Heh, I've always thought fighters lacked subtelty, and were too headstrong to use real tactics.
Magic is impressive. But now, Minsc leads! Swords for everyone! Minsc with lead with Blade and boot. Boo will take care of the details.

There`s tactics in melee fighting. Boo told me so and Boo is never wrong. Time to give the bottom of evil a liberal foot kicking!
