2 handed Warrior Character

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:40 am

I have recently decided to roll a new character, this one being a completely one dimensional 2 handed weapon weilding warrior. I will use no magic or no other weapons at all in my game as my previous characters have all had magic or bows and it just becomes far too easy very quickly.

My question to anyone who has played this type before is will it become really boring quite quickly just battering enemies with a big two hander or will I be entertained?

My previous character was a stealthy/archer/illusionist and with this I found the different options on how to approach any given situation just made things too easy. On this character I will use a little sneaking but will not steal anything and will try hard not to sway from my simple barbarian.

Any opinions welcome here as I'm not sure whether this will work for me or not

You might find it boring, but then again I imagine it will be quite refreshing being able to get into the faces of your enemies.

You can go toe to toe, or you can hang back slightly and take advantage of your superior reach. The latter, if you are good at anticipating enemy movements, more or less negates block as a skill. You'll only fear powerful mages, and for them, I prescribe a healthy dose of whirlwind sprint, slow time, become ethereal or unrelenting force to allow you to close in on them. They don't tend to pull out the big spells in close range...

I usually play stealthy or conjurer, but decided to make a 2-hander melee character. Everything died pretty quickly. Combat was basically mashing R1 with the odd power attack here and there. There were times when I thought "R1 R1 R1 R1 R1 R1 yawwwwnnnn" but I enjoyed the feeling of being a crazed barbarian caving in skulls. No sneaking around, just straight up bloody violence. Would do it again.

I love my battle axe barbarian nord. He's my fav build so far because i gave him character and is challenging because i dont wear any armor except bracers and only use meat and mead to refill vitals.

Also i dont get bored of battle axe beheadings ;)

I don't think 2H would be nearly as boring as sword and board. I spent my whole time countering off of blocks >.>

Some blocking perks are very useful for this kind of character.

I had a lot of fun playing a similar character. Try to consider a bit why your character avoids magic and other weapons. For example, I played a Nord barbarian who thought of ranged weapons, sneaking around, and magic spells as cowardly. I didn't pick any locks either, I had my follower make an attempt or just skipped a lot of locked chests and doors. No alchemy or enchanting, either.

Bleak Falls Barrow was really challenging at level 1 on Master with no followers. I got double teamed by two Restless Draugr at the end and died many times, as I couldn't easily interrupt their spells. After that point, it got easier. Volendrung is a great weapon for 2-hander as it recharges your stamina, combine it with the perks that ignore enemy armor and it is quite a powerful weapon.

Two Handers are fun because you can just run in and spam power attacks. Setting up an opponent for scenic beheadings is just fun, especially if you are finding a Thief or Mage to be boring. Yo can get a timing and attack rythm where a Two Hander becomes unstoppable. You can really set up where the Killcam will start, watching the last bandit drop off of a cliff while his head still rolls at your feet is one of the best feelings there is.

Once you reach the upper echelon of levels where Daedric Weaponry becomes Common, the two-handed style loses its experience for me. A Legendary Daedric Greatsword will kill most creatures at higher levels in only 3-10 normal swings. Gaining Unique Weaponry makes it so much easier to play through aswell, in some cases I found this boring. Wuuthrad was the axe I used for the longest and in my opinion was one of the best in-game (especially when fighting Thalmor for its speciality at killing elves or as I like calling it, The Racist Effect). The Ebony Blade was also a unique weapon, enjoyable for Two-Handed gameplay. It leveled up on the one-handed skill tree, swung faster than any two handed weapon I've used and had the drain ability. Once it reached its potential by killing fellow companions, it made my Nord Berserker almost unstoppable. Unfortunatly once you reach higher levels, the damage becomes nominal as even Bandits become problems on the road. The gameplay will keep you playing for at least a month if you keep the difficulty up but once you hit level 55 or the cap, regardless of what quests you attempt it will bore you.

On another note, I prefered Elemental Fury to any other shout. The idea of hitting my opponent twice in the time it would have normally took me to hit him once made it ideal.

I've done both builds that you mention in your original post, and I noticed something strange with the 2H option: I would get turned around a lot easier in dungeons. Because I wouldn't take time to carefully plan an escape, by just "running and gunning" as it were, I would often forget if I had been somewhere.

The hacking and slashing was quite refreshing and I made it to level 40ish before getting bored.

Best of luck to you!

I'm playing a two-handed warrior now, mages are my only problem, well mages and dragons.
For dragons I have a bow in my inventory but my low level in archery makes it almost useless.Mostly it just annoys them.

Power attacks are your key ability with two-handed weapons so it requires alot of stamina.
Block is also very usefull to bash and stagger your opponent when they get too close.

Spoiler
Dragonrend needs to be your best friend in that case.

Not only that, but it also swings at the speed of a Greatsword but does alot more damage and has a higher Stagger chance.

I'm doing one currently, my advice is just stock some potions and invest in block and heavy armor. And smithing, since you're not using restoration magic you'll need good defense so you don't have to heal at all, smithing and heavy armor does pretty well for physical damage, while for magic there's a perk of block that reduce elemental damage. And the strategy is to block, shield bash, hit, don't let yourself got hit too much early on since your defense probably isn't as sturdy as they are later on. Good luck.
