2 Handers & Light Armor, Hard to Survive!

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 10:20 am

Hi, i was just curious if there are any people out there whos main character uses 2 handers and light armor. My main (and first) character is a Sword and Shield with Heavy Armor type warrior. I am used to being able to take on pretty tough enemies, or groups of enemies without worrying too much about dying...

Im finding it hard to survive as a light armor user with no shield...Every battle is a panic for me as i scramble to get my healing spell going before im dead. I use Stormcloak Officer armor exclusively...is that my problem, since Its material isnt covered by a perk in the smithing tree? I even lowered the difficulty (to apprentice, i really hate to go lower than adept, but even on adept i was just getting annihilated by EVERYTHING) and battles are still very narrowly won by me. I was going half stamina, half health when i leveled. Maybe thats the problem? Maybe going all into health will overcome my weakness...but then i sacrifice my power attacks to make sure things die quickly... Im only level 12, so there is room to improve, i just thought id overcome my handicap much sooner than this. My heavy armor and shield warrior almost never died, and i played on expert difficulty from the start. Anyone want to share thoughts?

I have a 2H Nord with mixed armor and no perks so probably the same AR as you. I haven't had too much trouble on Adept but I put everything in health and relied on food for stamina. There are several things you can get and do but this would have to be in the hints forum to discuss the specifics.

My current character is a no magic, greatsword plus light armor High Elf, and I'm finding it way too easy. I'm only level 10, but I one-shot bandits and most enemies, and I play on adept. I might turn it up to expert, because it just isn't much of a challenge, and I haven't even abused smithing. I'm only using elven armor and weapons.

My current character is 2H and LA. Works just fine. I had to learn to move around in battles to not get hit at lower levels. Also, you can block with 2H if you need to. But, moving tactically in battle is much better in the long run.

yeah, my 2nd char is a khajiit assassin, I play on master level and I use dual welding, light armor, archery and sneak. It was hard for the first 25-30 levels, now it's getting easier (lvl42)

Once you master dodging, the 2HLA playstyle becomes relatively easy (and fun).

I play a fighter/mage that uses two-handers and ligth armor. Alteration spells provide extra armor, restoration spells and block survivability and destruction and magic staffs long range attack capability.

Quite succesfull combination, really.

This, you can more or less dodge every single attack and should never be taking physical damage. I just run around with clothing with Enchants on it, I only stacked Stamina. I keep everything Staggered and enemies explode in a hit or two.

I have a Nord 2-hander, wearing Light Armor as well. It's fun, but you do have to be careful.

The best thing to do is work up your Block skill to the point where you can get Quick Reflexes. This makes a *major* difference in your ability to get through a fight without downing potion after potion. Just block, and when the enemy does a power attack, time will slow and you can sidestep out of the way, circling around behind him. Then hit 'im with a power attack of your own.

Don't bother with bashing while time is slowed; you'll just waste stamina.

Other than that, I try to level up Health 2 or 3 times before Stamina. I don't go 50-50, in other words; more like 60-40.

Obviously keep pumping your 2-handed perks and Light Armor when you can get it. Light Armor levels slowly with this playstyle, as you don't want to get hit a lot in the first place. Might be good to buy some training.

Yes, my Nord is a bit like Conan too - does a bit of Sneak to survey the situation, and may even use a bow. Frostvenom poison is considered ok, too.

It's funny - I've currently got two characters who use 2-handers; my Nord with light armor, and an Orc with heavy. You'd think they'd play the same, but it's a very different feel. The Nord needs to be crafty, paying attention to his surroundings and exploiting terrain where possible. The Orc basically kicks in the door and starts swinging his war hammer.

I don't play Dead-is-Dead, but rather "Dead-is-I-need-to-play-a-new-character-until-that-one-dies". My Nord made it to around level 12, when he ran into a Bandit Marauder wielding a greatsword of his own. Rolled up the Orc, who is now at the same level, but has had a *much* easier time.

I have a Khajit thief that uses light armor and 2-handed. I also use a little conjuring and lots of bows to soften them up. I only pull out the big blade when they get close enough. Elven armor is the best I could fiind at lower levels.

It works absolutely fine. Early on I enchanted fortify health armor and just chug a lug healtg potions. Like 10 per fight.

Use alchemy to brew them , buy them. Works great

After maxing out one-handed, I switch to two-handed weapons, and I'm glad that I didn't start out the game this way. Two-handed weapons are significantly slower than one-handed weapons, and after bashing an enemy, they sometimes have time to recover and get their shield back up before I can get my attack in.

I see that you want to stay mobile as much as possible. I'm still stuck in my old ways of blocking attacks, and then bashing and countering. I tend to favor the more defensive warriors.

My 2H guys tend to use Heavy armor, for obvious reasons, but I do have a 2H+Bow character planned that will use Light Armor instead and do a fair amount of sneak-combat (yeah, I'll be dropping a wad of cash on LA training). Said character will wait until I have a better feel for 2H combat on Master, as it's very different than on Adept, even with Heavy armor's higher inherent protection, due to the higher output you're facing.
