Hard Drive Question

Post » Tue Jun 21, 2011 3:38 pm

My parents have an old broken Dell 8250 that won't boot up.(They need a new computer anyway) If I get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

Could I take out their HDD and plug it into it and access the files on my computer?

Basically, I just want to make sure that product is compatible before I purchase it.

Thanks guys!

Should work. I actually had that problem, and I used a device just like that to get off a bunch of my data.

It isn't so simple though. The HDD that you'd be getting the files from still has an OS on it, and that OS will not like what you're doing.

What would I have to do?

I don't know what OSes you have, but for me my old OS was XP and my new one is Windows 7. All I had to do was force administrator rights on all of the files that I wanted to access. Not hard, but annoying.

Silly windows file permissions, that's what Linux is for

(Heh, just last week a file was complaining about file permissions and all my attempts to take ownership failed, so I through it up on my web server and downloaded it to clear out the Windows file permissions :P)

Yeah the old OS is XP Professional, and I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. So I'll just do exactly what you said then?

Yep. It should ask you if you want to take ownership of the folder. Do so, and make sure that you take ownership of all the sub-folders and files or you'll be having to take ownership many more times.

This thread reminds me that I should really install my Hard Drive inside my case instead of leaving it in the top SATA dock.

I think I'll go do that then. Or I would if I actually had an extra SATA cable.

You really don't even need one. If you have an extra slot to plug in a SATA drive then you can just install it into your computer and not worry about USB speeds. Unless it's not SATA.

Assuming I don't, would you get that one or a different one?

I think that I may have that one. It's a good thing to have too, just in case you need it. It's cheap, so why not?

It's a really simple device, so there really isn't any reason to be worried about if it'll work or not.

I'd get whichever one was at my local computer store since I wouldn't want to have to wait for shipping to get my data off the old hard drive.

Heh, I wish I was lucky enough to have a local computer store.
