hardcoe Mode and Damage?

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 4:19 am

When hardcoe mode was first announced for New Vegas; they mentioned that damage delivered and received would be increased while hardcoe mode is active. (IE. More realistic = Everything dies easier.)

Is this feature still included? Every information site, topic, or discussion on hardcoe mode recently hasn't mentioned it; only the dehydration, starvation, stimpack, and crippled stuff.

hardcoe is separate from difficulty. Its been stated that you can play FO:NV on "Easy" with "hardcoe" active. As I understand it... No, HC mode does not affect damage.

Well this damage-changing would be different from difficulty levels.

-----

I'll try to put it this way. Let's say:

Easy Difficulty = The player can take high damage. Enemies can take little damage.

Normal Difficulty = The player can take normal damage. Enemies can take normal damage.

Hard Difficulty = The player can take little damage. Enemies can take high damage.

hardcoe Mode = The player can take less damage. Enemies can take less damage.

-----

Pretty much would hardcoe mode, in relation to the currently used difficulty level, make everyone (including you) a little less resilient to shotgun rounds to the face?

Edit: For clarity.

Reminds me of playing Icewind Dale 2 in "Heart of Fury mode" playing first level characters. (I was 7th level before I left the docks )

hardcoe is designed to add annoyance.

Spoiler
Though I expect never to play FO:NV without playing hardcoe.

Anyways! To add more clarity on this matter.

I read about this damage-modifier in a Game Informer magazine 5+ months ago whenever New Vegas was first announced. It's a bit more subtle of a feature so I'm not sure if it's been overlook or scrapped (or if I have been just imagining it this entire time).

To me, they would add this to hardcoe mode for two reasons.

1.) To add even more realism along with everything else so not everything can take a brutal amount of bullets. (Example: "omg how did that raider take 17 bullets to the chest???" or "lol, I just took 17 bullets to the chest. Still have half health!")

2.) Your ammo has weight. Weight limits you. Limited ammo means you have fewer bullets to pump into enemies who may be bullet sponges. You don't want to be completely out of ammo after killing one random tough guy in the desert. (Example: Oh, I just killed three Super Mutant Masters and used up the 200 bullets I was carrying. Guess I'll have to go back across the desert to my house, resupply, come all the way back and clear the rest of this Super Mutant stronghold. I hope another 200 bullets is enough for killing the next two dozen super mutants that are here.)

I understand that ammo weight is supposed to limit you and make you conservative and smart with your ammo use. At the same time I wouldn't want to be low on ammo everytime I kill a "bullet sponge" enemy. Just a single FO3's Albino Radscorpion could take half a man's body weight in ammo.

hardcoe only affects ammo having weight, having a dehydration, sleep, and starvation meter, and stimpacks taking time to heal. it has been stated numerous times by members of the dev team that hardcoe mode will have no effect on difficulty. the reasons given for adding hardcoe mode were to add immersion and it was one of the most used mods so they figured people liked enough maybe they should add it.

as fo enemies being bullet sponges it should be less of an issue with DT which works by having armor block a certain amount of damage so let say you've got a 10mm pistol doing 12 dmg and the raider your shooting is wearing metal armor with a DT of 20 12-20=-8 so you'd do no damage since the round didn't penetrate their armor. this makes it so that a person in power armor doesn't have ridiculously high health and with armor piercing round will go done quickly, certain enemies have a natural armor like a rad scorpions shell.

ps. all weapons have a minimum amount of damage that they will do so you can kill a guy in power armor with a .22 which is a very weak gun it would just take a lot of rounds, so enemies are only bullet sponges it you let them be.

I'm referring to hardcoe mode affecting damage tables separately and very differently than difficulty levels. Although I'm not sure if I'm being understood here... I guess if hardcoe mode doesn't affect damage, it doesn't affect damage.

I wish I still had that Game Informer article. :sadvaultboy:

hardcoe mode does not directly affect damage or modify the enemy AI in anyway, only the difficulty levels do things like that.

As mentioned, hardcoe mode adds dehydration, crippled limbs not cured by sleeping in beds, hunger, weighted ammo, sleep deprivation, stimpaks and healing items take time but thats mostly it. It has no effect on actual fighting aside from the stat penalties you might incur while tired or hungry or crippled.

That's why I used ammo conservatively, and switched to my sword when those blasted things came in close range. I also was lucky to have a high explosives skill, so my mines and grenades caused them major damage. Couple that with high Luck, and the ninja perk, scoring a lot of criticals, and well... I took them down in maybe four-rifle shots and a grenade. But my Melee skill was low, so I imagine with hardcoe mode adding weight to bullets, I will definitely hone in my Melee skills for creatures, and use bullets mainly for enemies that can also fire long range attacks (Aka raiders, supermutants, Feral Ghoul Reavers (Which I loathe with a [censored] passion) and the like).

@ OP i take it you want to know if 'hardcoe' mode is like hardcoe mode on mw2 where enemies and urself die with realistic amount of bullets (if you call mw2 realistic). If thats what you mean, then no as far as we know 'hardcoe' mode only adds the survial bars like sleep, food, and water nessesity. While i actually would like something like a mode like that in FONV, i beleive it wouldnt work for the simple reason that FO's combat is a bit too clunky for that.

I like the damage the way it is. What realy trivialised F3 was stimpacks. All you had to do was pause before you die and your magicly at full health when you unpause. Thankfully they addressed this. I just hope you cant heal crippled limbs during battle on the pipboy.

The latest podacst confirmed that hardcoe does not effect damage in any way.

Bummer, well as long as there's an option for high damage (against you and your enemies). It's no fun emptying 5 clips on a single enemy. Also no fun taking millions of hits and spamming stimpacks like there's no tomorrow.

Well hardcoe mode also changes the stimpack healing from instant to over time, so if you were being fired on by a multitude of foes you would probably still die even if you spammed stimpack usage.

I dont believe hardcoe affects difficulty. I remember a dev saying its not 'Hard mode' but its 'Realistic mode' so who knows.

"Realistic Mode" is more accurate maybe. Yeah, afaik it only affects day-to-day survival strategy (eg in normal it doesn't matter whether you eat or not, in hardcoe it does). Combat is changed in difficulty. Two different settings.

If hardcoe mode would be Realistic mode it would make sense to include what OP is saying.

Although I know what OP is trying to make clear, I can't seem to find to words to clarify it.

Perhaps add more realism to damage modifiers, not neccesarily (sp?) increasing difficulty. (because difficulty is more than just damage dealt)
