hardcoe has nothing to do with the difficulty of the game. Switching to hardcoe mode does not in really make the game more difficult. Stimpacks become heal over time, so no instantly going from nearly dead to fine with button spamming. And you need doctor's kits to restore crippled limbs. Those make you think about combat a little bit more.

Unfortunately, I don't think it adds much to the experience otherwise. You just have to manage three more stats that work the same was as Rads. As the levels climb, you get weaker until you die. Every so often you need to do something to reset those levels. The trouble is, it's not terribly pressing most of the time. You need to take a nap every couple of days, munch a bit of food and drink some water. All of which you will find in plentiful supply. It really just become (to me) an annoying exercise in bookkeeping to make sure I have some munchies and water along with me.

Annoying?
The FOD, SLP and H20 meters go up in such a snail pace that they aren't even noticeable.
Crippling yourself right off the bat and killing Mitchel and the doctor in NCRCF can become a problem but not likely.
Ammo weight is hardly noticeable.
Heal over time just enhances the difficulty. (Only part I actually think they got right in HCM.)

So no, it's not annoying, with the exception of heal over time it's barely noticeable.

I really like the changes that hardcoe makes to healing and it does make the game more difficult - healing during a battle is much slower and afterward you can't just jump in to a bed for an hour.

Ammo weight was also nice - it's a shame meds weren't also given weight.

Companions can also die in hardcoe, I didn't find that this affected me too much but it does prevent me from sending them in to repeated suicide missions to clear out nasties.

The food/water/sleep requirements I did find pretty annoying and after completing the game in hardcoe the first time I haven't gone back because of them. It's a shame these aren't individually toggle-able as I'd love to play with the hardcoe health system without having to worry about water and food supplies.

I do think it's worth trying however just to see what it's like.

I played thru the game on hardcoe, and it didn't really change much of the game, except that the companions can die so you care for them more.
Ammo weight is hardly noticeable.

I don't really agree with that, when I switched hardcoe mode off, my inventory lost about half it's weight :P

I would say do it, it gets you more into the game and is a good challenge at times, I took it right way and have liked it

it can get annoying sometimes, it makes it difficult to carry many weapons and there ammo.

Ammo isnt a big deal if you can focus on using an effective weapon with reletivly light ammo (like the hunting rifle)

Stimpaks healing overtime is probably the most difficult thing to get used to.

just drink from sinks, toilets and bodys of water whenever you find them, and carry around some food.

you should try it at least once. and if you dont like it, turn it off.

(companions become a huge burden in this mode, just ignore them)

I don't carry a lot of ammo which is why I don't really notice it.
If one hordes the ammo then I'm sure that there is a noticeable difference.

To me, companions become mortal is the biggest difference/pain in the butt in hardcoe mode. They aren't very smart, and the controls to make them do what you want are extremely inadequate to the task of never letting them get to zero hitpoints. They will gleefully charge into melee with enemies that will kill them instantly, they have no idea what a landmine is (either yours or enemy, doesn't matter), they will jump off cliffs instead of gingerly slithering down like you did, etc etc etc. If you ride solo, hardcoe mode is an interesting change of pace. If you want to bring friends, hardcoe mode is a way to force you to reload tough battles ten times in a row until your companions miraculously survive.

Start the game with hardcoe mode on, and if you can tolerate it or even enjoy it like I do (believe it or not), leave it on. If you find it as annoying as everyone else says you should think it is, you can turn it off whenever you like. And then back on again if you change your mind.

I actually like hardcoe mode because it gives more purpose to the Survival skill, more purpose to food and water, makes you pack more efficiantly rather than just grabbing up any loose ammo you can find to the point where you're carrying enough to supply the NCR all by yourself, makes fights more intelligent instead of just charging headlong into combat and just cramming a dozen stimpacks into your @$$ to instantly heal you, and NPC doctors have more purpose because beds won't magically heal everything that ails you either. That's just me, though - my definition of "fun" obviously may not fit your definition of "fun".

I abandoned my first playthrough at level 25 to start over with a different/better character build.

Two other changes I made for my "retry" playthrough was adding hard core mode and rolling with companions minimally.

Now at level 15, the game is so much more immersive than the first try. I can't attribute it exclusively to hardcoe mode but it definitely helps. There's something to be said for having nasty consequences to taking damage (Crippled limbs and concussions svck. Even more so if you're in the middle of nowhere, don't have a doctors bag or hydra and are NOT a fan of fast travel).

It really makes you think things through before charging in.

I do like hardcoe mode and it has made me appreciate snipers so much more. I actually haven't played NV without it on, its not too much of a burden it just makes you think more before you charge into battle.

I agree that hardcoe mode is kind of annoying, but it's not as bad as all that. It's tough at first but after a couple of hours it's barely even an afterthought anymore. I'll play through the game once to get my achievement, and then any future playthroughs will probably be non-hardcoe (just because it's annoying to have to carry around food and water).

hardcoe makes the game much more exciting on the lower levels. Its amazing how tense the game gets when you're hiding a a corner waiting for the stimpack to heal, praying your enemy wont see you. On the higher levels its not as fun because you still become pretty unkillable when fighting anything that isnt a deathclaw. An as others have said, the food water and sleep raise so slowly, its unnoticeable.

The most difficult part of hardcoe is repairing broken limbs at the beginning of the game, the progressive nature of healing, and keeping your companions alive.

The first two aren't a huge issue, but if you plan on playing with companions, just play on Normal.

I have to say go for it because if you start out on the hardest level possible then you can really experience the game, imo, whereas if you start on a lower level you get used to it and the harder level just because too frustrating whereas you can go from harder to easier and still enjoy the game. But still its not that hard, im not sure what my level is set at besides hardcoe cause what i thought was that you had standard and the basic choices like easy normal and hard, and then you had hardcoe so when it didnt give me an option to choose my level thats what i figured it was but from what i gather theres also easy normal and hard on hardcoe mode. right? ill have to check it out on my next go through dont feel like changing anything this go through. But anyway, go for hardcoe :P.

It's not hard, just adds some depth if you like à ltitle roleplay/imersion, you have to decide for yourself.

After I finish my current hadrcore game I don't plan on using on future play-throughs. I consider it more tedious than immersive .

Personaly i like hardcoe because it adds one more layer to the fallout experiance
its not about being harder to play (because it isnt)
but about making the game even more in debth

hardcoe = annoying.

Search for _____ to make a recipe. Drink water. Find campfire. Drink water. Realize you didn't collect enough of a particular plant. Fast Travel. Drink water. Find plant. Fast Travel. Drink water. Use campfire. Consume food for minimal benefit. Wait for dawn. Drink water. REPEAT.

Get ambushed. Get crippled on second hit. Win fight. Fast travel to doctor. Drink water. Get healed. Get ambushed. Crippled on second hit. Win. Doctor. Water. REPEAT.

I'm very much pro-hardcoe mode. For me it doesn't make the game that much harder, but it does make me think about what supplies I'm carrying and how I distribute my inventory weight, which improves the immersion-level a bit.

Combining hardcoe mode with the New Vegas version of the Fellout mod (makes nighttime really dark) has made me think about some things I didn't think much about in FO3. Fellout also makes settlements look really dark and gritty at night! Freeside especially looks a lot cooler at night now that it's mostly lit by trashcan fires.
