To hardcoe or not

Post » Mon Apr 11, 2011 5:55 pm

Okay, I plan on picking up NV in a day or two. I heard from reviews that hardcoe is brutal. I like a challenge, but I also like my games to be fun. So can sombody tell me if I should leave hardcoe for another playthrough? I am basically looking for somebody to tell me if hardcoe is challeging but still fun, or too challenging and frustrating?

I still have a long way to go to give you my conclusion on starting hardcoe, but I dislike one thing about hardcoe. You cannot sleep to restore your health. If you can I must be doing something wrong or there is a glitch.

I don't have an actual source, so believe me at your own risk, but I believe I've heard that you have to sleep in a bed in order to heal in hardcoe mode.

I can tell you there is a (Reccomended) next to NO, so Obsidian doesnt reccomend it. From what I can tell hardcoe mode is for the true Masochist, those who just *love* punishing themselves.
You'd honestly probaly be fine on normal or hard if you want a challenge but want fun too.

I think this is correct... BUT your limb injuries still dont heal... I do remember after I slept in a bed and my health bar did go up %25 , but doesnt heal my limbs unfortunately

Either it's how the game is or I just don't remember how to play (which is impossible because FO3 was easy) but I'm having a lot more trouble killing things and have had a lot of close calls, I have been doing a lot of exploring though and am only level 4. A lot harder than Fallout 3 IMO.

Beds don't heal my wounds. Only my Vault 13 canteen heals me and doesn't affect limbs. Luckily I have gotten good at Caravan so I win enough caps to pay a doctor and buy bags.

As far as hardcoe goes, all you get is an achievement. Not worth it. Plus it gets very frustrating playing on VH hardcoe.

Drink water especially non-irriated water. Just hold down E until you are healed to drink continuously.

hardcoe isn't brutal. It should've been called "Survival Mode" probably as it doesnt really ramp up the difficulty (of opponents anyway). What it does is add the need to drink, eat, sleep, but it's done in a way that actually works well and isn't bad at all. Also- Limbs can only be healed by doctor or using doctor bag. Stims and Rad-Away heal over time instead of instantly as well.

You're making hardcoe mode sound a whole lot harder then it actually is. To be honest, I keep forgetting that its on... it really doesn't make the game harder or anything. Sure I can't sleep and heal, and need to eat/drink from time to time but that's it. I'm always drinking water and eating food anyway, and money/stimpacks are not an issue after the first couple hours. The ammo weight isn't a problem either because you only need so much ammo at any one time.

It adds a touch more depth to the game, but make it harder? Not at all IMO.

"hardcoe" isn't that much harder but it feels more like the way Obsidian intended the game to be.

Really now...

Then why is the big (RECOMMENDED) text next to the NO option, and why is hardcoe by default off?

Maybe because hardcoe being off is the way Obsidian intended it? If Obsidian intended for hardcoe to be the way the game is meant to be played, they wouldn't give you the option to turn it off.

you can sleep to regain health if you own the bed or you rent one.

I'd give it a whirl, and if you don't like it, just turn it off.

spoiler free thoughts:

I have been playing since this afternoon and hardcoe seems awesome. It doesn't nag at you for doing things, and it isn't tedius. You get to use the crap you normally pickup and sell or throw away, and there are lots of interesting mechanics that make it work. You will see these mechanics within an hour of playing the game. The game seems to have been designed with the intention of being played with the extra complexity, I say go for it!

The Dehydration/Sleep Deprevation/Hunger mechanics are pretty boring in my opinion.

The things I do like about hardcoe however, is that you heal HP over time, which makes getting into fights a little more dangerous, and that the limbs are more serious injuries.

Sleep and food deprivation need to be tuned up quite a bit before hardcoe can match real life standards you can go 3-4 days without sleep before it even warns you about minor deprivation and you don't have to eat that much either just get some geko steak and your good to go for a week, I mean the food isn't too bad but sleep could use a few notches.

hardcoe mode is defaulted to OFF for players who are brand new to Fallout. They recommend you turn it on only if you're an experienced player.

The mechanics are basically radiation x 5. You have 5 forms of radiation (rads, sleep, food, water) that need to be kept in check throughout the game. The mechanics need a different overhaul than just how fast you get the debuffs.

"hardcoe" really isn't that difficult. The Healing mechanics are different, and that's the only real noticeable difference. Given a lot of Food not only decrease hunger but also dehydration, it really becomes a bit of just checking the meters every so often. Sleeps not much more difficult really, find a place to bed down and get a few hours of shut eye every day and you're good to go.
