The hot topic requirement is set on the number of posts in the topic (not that it is posted in quickly). I don't remember the exact number required but it is way above the post limit of 200 posts.

Edit - Here is the answer from a previous thread.

At the moment hot topic status is achieved at 500 replies so you only really see it in the mod & admin forum.

The only time we get them is when a topic goes completely spamming and a mod isnt around to lock it....its rare, but has happened.

There was a time when hot topic status requried 20 replies, when I first registered achieving a hot topic was a big deal, but then this is a time when reaching a post count of 1000 was sufficient to have a congratulatory thread :)

Ah yes "Stupid Things You Used to Believe" aka "Superthread". That was quite a while ago.

We've had several, but only when the mods aren't around.

They end up being deleted, mods don't want evidence of their [censored] ups lingering around.

Yeah but there was one just a short while ago. It only lasted like half an hour but it got rolling.

You used to see them a fair bit on the previous version of the forums. I think the qualifying number was too low then and it's obviously too high now...

It should be set to 100 posts. That seems reasonable in my opinion.

I'd say 150 but it's not really our choice.

This may sound stupid, but what's a hot topic? I'm guessing just a topic that has been shown a lot of interest?

Pretty much. Changes the icon to a flaming folder.

I think showing hot topics is pretty much a waste. The whole idea is for a thread that has a lot of interest and bubbles along fairly quickly. Firstly threads here get closed a 200 posts - hardly allows for a lot of enthusiastic posting before we have to start a new one if required, and secondly I see there are threads in one of the mod forums that have been going for months - one even back as far as 2009 - with 150+ posts, they would be marked as "Hot" but they are hardly so.

The topics that can be called hot are fairly obvious, they sit at the top of the forum page and every one spams posts in them. :D

Is it possible to mark a topic as "hot" if it has reach X amount of posts in Y amount of time? Meaning a thread that is two months old and has 100 posts wouldn't be hot, but a thread that has been out 1 day and has 80 posts would be hot?

I'd quite like it to be set to 142 posts. And rather than "hot topic" it could instead be called "slightly soiled".
