I have to download the whole game?

Post » Mon Feb 14, 2011 11:15 pm

ok. i installed steam.
then steam promptly told me the game will be ready to play in about 7 hours.
incidentally the download file is about 6.5GB... the same size as the DVD that i had rush-delivered!

I can not seem to install from the disk.... it goes right download from steam every time i try to start it....

I hate this. is there a way to circumvent steam and install from the disk?

"When Installing Game from Disc / DVD / CD, Steam is automatically launched (executed), validates the game files, and then begins to download the the game files instead of installing the files from the actual disk."

1. Load Steam and Select the Library
2. Right click the game -> "Delete Local Content"
3. Insert the disc into your DVD drive
4. Close Steam
5. Go to Start -> Run and type in--
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:

Make sure to replace the path to Steam with the path to your Steam.exe. Replace the letter "E" with your DVD drive letter. Then press OK.

The installation should now use the files in the DVD rather than downloading them from the internet now.

I hope this helps!

Thanks a ton!

I got it to execute the command, but it did the exact same thing again.... and started downloading the program from Steam.
I had a bad feeling when i looked at the box and saw the "Steam account required" note on it.

I'll check out that link you posted for more info...

thanks a ton (another one) for checking!!

lokivt!

you are even more awesome than i thought!

I needed to actually re-insert the disk... and execute the run command while the auto-play window was up!

before i just left the disk in from the earlier install attempt.

When i did EXACTLY what you suggested, it worked.

Thanks lokivt!

No problem Aeshna!

I don't even have the game yet or a computer to play it on (my PC is in for warranty repair and FONV is being free shipped via Amazon)!

Over the last few days I was reading about all the problems with Steam and various bugs and I foulnd that page, So I bookmarked it in case I needed it. Well it looks like you needed it and if I don't at least you got some good use from it.

I'm glad I could help you!

Mind you some archives (that can be 1-3 GBs in size) on the disc can be corrupted or needed of a patch/replacement. If that's the case you'll need to download anyway.
