I have Dragon Age Origins : The Ultimate Edition

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:42 am

This game looked really cool to me when I seen trailers for it and what not. I mean, I really wanted to get into it. But now that I have it, it bores me to tears! I"ve tried playing through at least four times...each time with a different generated character. I just can't seem to get into it. But everyone I know keeps telling me its a really great game.

Perhaps Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas have ruined other video games for me. None others seem to compare.

I guess it depends on what you were expecting. If you were expecting TES-like combat or open world exploration you're not going to get that with Dragon Age. The story and its presentation are good though.

Next time look up actual gameplay footage and reviews before you buy a game, CG trailers are hardly an accurate representation of a game. (especially in this case)

I never really liked it either. For me it tried too much to present itself like a movie, I couldn't get in to that.

Yeah, I even watched a few "Lets Play..." gameplay footage videos over on Youtube about Dragon Age Origins.

I think it's a great RPG, with a few of the most memorable characters this gen (Allistair and Morrigan). You'll get a much more in depth story with Dragon Age, so you should just try enjoying it for what it is.

I guess I need to start paying closer attention to what game studios bring out what games. I just noticed the company that made Dragon Age Origins is the same company that made Mass Effect...another game that looked cool that I couldn't get into.

How far did you actually get? Origins is all about the story and the choices you make it that story (Bethesda could learn from that!). It's slowly building up so you may just need to give it more time if you haven't gotten very far yet.

Well, Bioware's RPG are a completely different nich of Bethesda's ones. Whereas Beth focus on the world and freedom of action, Bioware strength lies on story and character development, with a strong focus on the relationships between the main char and surrounding people. Both studios are true to pen-and-paper RPG's in their own right: Beth for not pushing your character to do anything in any order and allowing to freely decide the order of your actions, or if you'll take them at all. On BW's games, you can hear the dices rolling, and you actually feel like part of a group of fellow adventurer's on a big quest.

DAO is a great game. Give it another chance, with a different mindset that the one you have when playing FO.

NecrosisDemon and leomorg...you both make very good points. No, I haven't really gotten too far in the game each time I tried to play. And leomorg, I see your point as well. I was expecting something along the lines of a Bethesda game (Elder Scrolls or Fallout) and I guess I need to change my mindset and just flow with the story rather than relying heavily on the gameplay. Thank you both.

DA:O has a serious pacing problem... in that there is no pacing. It goes Marathon dialog session - Marathon combat slog X 7. Now, those marathons are filled with good stuff (including the best classic RPG combat in years), but it's presented horribly. Before anyone buys that game, they need to ask themselves if they think four hour long dialog sessions, followed by four hour long combat sessions are their idea of fun. Personally, I only really got tired towards the end of the especially long combat sessions, but I've also been known to happily spend hours laying in a field watching the night sky.

They also made KOTOR and the Balder's Gate series which are considered to be some of the best RPG's ever. It is a completely different type of RPG, I personally played Fallout 3 before Origins and getting through the Origin story was a bit difficult for me at first, but the story and lore are just too amazing to pass up. Bethesda and Bioware could really learn a lot from each other.

I've played through Origins and started the Awakening campaign...it's good but it does get boring. It starts to feel more like a strategy game near the endgame scenario in Origins. I love the ME series, that's got better action and better aesthetics imo.

I loved it! I thought the combat would ruin it for me when I started, but the story, setting and characters made me love it.

When I am researching a game, the thing I research most isn't what's good about it, what it did better than the other games, or what it innovated. Instead, I study what it did bad. If possible I also try to rent the game or get a demo beforehand so I don't screw up and buy a bad game, as I've done that many, many times before, and have learned. I anolyze reviews, posts, videos, demos. That is how I make sure to never screw up on a game (but it can occasionaly fails :()

Coming off of games where you have the freedom to make every block, swing and fire, Dragon Age Origin's gameplay was a real turn off for me as memories of games like KOTOR and MMO's were so far behind me, I forgot that this type of combat still existed.

I was patient, did a bit of reading online about how to master the combat system and learned that the best way to play was to pause, issue commands and repeat. Once I learned that, I was able to enjoy the game.

So in essence, once you are able to fluently use the tools (driving the mechanics) dragon age provides you to play, you can then enjoy the game.

That being said, if you simply can't get into it because of the gameplay, I'd suggest picking up the second one. The combat is something like Fable or any other button masher. Plus, its hard to be disappointed with it if you haven't played the first one. :)

Well, really, what it comes down to is that DA2 is, by default, set to an easier difficulty level, and has fewer abilities (which makes tactics / AI simpler). You can play DA:O like a newb if you want to (by lowering the difficulty), and I enjoy the rich tactical combat of DA2 at hard & nightmare difficulty levels. Personally, the classic RPG combat is the chief appeal for the DA series right now, since there are a fair number of games that provide similar storytelling experience, but very few with good tactical party-based combat.

There are very few games with stories, lore, characters, dialogue, setting and depth as rich as Dragon Age: Origins'...actually in my personal opinion there aren't any, but that's just me.

I never got into the first Dragon Age either, to me it was too much of a numbers game. I actually prefered Dragon Age 2 (which everybody but me hates) which was simplified.

I've found that making a mage is sometimes easier to master than a warrior. If you're a warrior you have 40+ different attacks for "swinging a sword" - with a mage you know what's what, a fireball is a fireball and lightning is lightning, there's no confusion there.

I dislike the combat so keep it n easy. lso it has great music, not game like you were expecting though.

Wht type of game would you want ? Dont just say F3 or NV list what you liked, we may be able to help you find another you may like, llthough the only open world rpgs tht spring to mind to me are divinity 2 and two worlds (2)...

I am simply looking for a decent RPG set in a fantasy world where the fighting and gameplay mechanics is similar to Fallout 3 and NV. I already have Oblivion and I"ll be getting Skyrim as soon as the price drops (I refuse to pay 60 bucks for a video game...unless the Fallout logo is on it...lol). I"m not asking for something the same as Fallout. I"m just wanting a decent fantasy RPG for the Xbox360.

As far as games I have that I like...I have all of the Fable games. Fable the Lost Chapters was awesome. Fable II was okay but not as good as Fable TLC. Fable III was an abomination of the other two games and needs to be sent back to the bowels of Hell from whence it came. I also have Brutal Legend, which I love. Oh, and the Bioshock games are GREAT. So, I guess I"m into "action rpg's"? I don't really go by genre titles. The only kind of games I really can't get into is sports games and war games, like Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, stuff like that.

Anyway, any suggestions any of you folks can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ratslayer.

Really? The characters and dialogue are great, definitely, but I found the story to be incredibly bland, cliché and horribly predictable. Not Bethesda-bad, but much less impressive than Bioware's stories used to be. The reason I loved Dragon Age was for the levelling and combat systems, much better imo than what you usually see in 'RPGs' these days.

Yes Fable (tlc) ws awesome. A shame Lionhead have failed to make something as good as it.

I cant think f anything with a similer playstyle to F3 and FNV, closest I can think of is Deus ex HR(Stalker if your on PC). But I will reccomend Alpha protocal, different gamepl to the ones you mentioned, but it does choice and consiquene really well. It plays like ME1 however.

Do you like post apocalyptic games ? If its the atmosphere, its not an RPG but Metro 2033 is amazing for its atmosphere.

I got a loan of the game a good while back, completed it once and went for a second playthrough as an elf, never finished it again it got boring.
I never expected much but it was a lot slower and I don't think I ever really caught on to what was happening, apart from an evil dragon who appears in visions thanks to some Gandolf impersonator, or how to use magic and other boosting items.

...Actually I might give it another run now...Thank you
