I have over 100 hours logged in this game and I still don't

...how to get the game to recognize my choice of dialogue options on the PC. I click on on dialogue option I want, and it thinks I selected another. I've tried clicking on the text. I've tried clicking on the symbol at the left. I try to click the highlighted option, but that doesn't always work and sometimes the highlight appears to get stuck. It seems almost random whether it's going to recognize my choice. For the record, I'm using my left mouse pointer button to click and sometimes my mouse scroll wheel to scroll for these interactions. Y'know, like how it's done with most game menu systems.

Am I missing something or is the game menu system just crucially broken? I'm at a certain part of the game, probably near the end, where the unreliability is driving me berserk.

That, sadly. You have to juke and jive with the mouse buttons and the mousewheel, and eventually it hopefully will select the one you want... but it takes some dinking around, usually. This is truly the most odius user interface I have ever used in a PC video game, since I started with Doom back in 1996. Oh- Doom's was far better. They obviously tried to make the Skyrim UI 'console friendly', but from what the console users tell me, it's pretty crappy for them, too.

I have hundreds of hours in the game and I still have problems. If I use the mouse, sometimes it does not register. If I use the keyboard, the slightest movement of the mouse will change the selection.

Aw, geez. I was afraid this was the answer. I don't see how I have a chance of making a companion mod when I can't navigate 3 minutes of the first few real choices the game's deigned to bestow upon me. A controller... it's just... beyond the principle of the thing, and the freedom I'm used to having with a keyboard... I don't know.

I tried this and determined that the controller is among the worst ways to run this game. The only advantage I saw was variable speed movement, which they could have done on the keyboard if the cared.

Agree. I have never used a console controller on a PC game, ever- and if the day comes when that is the only way to play a game on a PC, I sure as hell ain't buying that game. A computer was made to excel when used with a keyboard and mouse, and it does. Well-made action-adventure format games play magnificently with a mouse and keyboard, and have since PC gaming began. Quite arguable much better than any console controller ever could, and with FAR more options and customizability. Forcing a PC game to have to use a console controller, is an atrocity against technical and mechanical common sense. It's just pure laziness by a company that favors console systems over PC hardware, and doesn't bother to try to make the controls work well on a PC. Which ain't that hard, if you got a clue.

Yep, problem of a console port interface. The whole interface should be made differently for PC.

No, the problem isn't solved- what should be an unnecessary workaround, is utilized. And I have always preferred the mouse for onscreen UI interactions. Having to mess with the keyboard just in order to get the crappy UI to do what you want, is not a satisfactory resolution.

Yeah you definitely need to use the keyboard. The problem is that if you use the keyboard, sometimes it will select whatever your mouse cursor happens to be over. In order for 100% accurate scrolling, open up the dialogue tab, move your mouse WAY over to the left side of the screen, completely off the dialogue options, and then use your keyboard to scroll around.

Install SkyUI.

That's only for the inventory, not conversations.

The menu system needs work. It's severely bugged. I commend Beth for thinking to integrate WASD/arrow menu navigation, but it wasn't tested in QA enough—if at all.
