today took me 2 installs of Steam before I could even get the game install started. So my 2 hours of play time became 1 after installs and patching.

Mine also said it was installing from disk (in the window), but it in fact wasn't. The CD wasn't spinning or reading. I didn't even have steam installed on my PC when I ran setup.exe. It is a clean copy of Windows XP SP3 that was installed just for Fallout NV. Nothing but drivers and Direct X installed.

The setup.exe installed Steam then asked me if I had and account or wanted to create one. I logged in with my existing account, and it proceeded to spend 40+ minutes downloading the game, when it could have installed it from the CD in under 10 minutes.

On Windows 7 the path would be:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -install D:
Providing that the "D" is your DVD/CD Drive

I tried that, and it did not work. I have also tried validating the install, and it goes from 66% to 100% and says "1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired." I then try to reinstall, and it says the same thing, at the same percentage.

Well it looks like I won't be buying this game any time soon. There's no way I can download a 6.5 gig file, even if it is an accidental thing that doesn't happen to everyone. I'm using an unreliable wireless connection with a bandwidth limit of about 200 meg per day, so I'm not going to hand over a bunch of money just to find out I'm one of the unlucky ones and can't even get the game running. Bethesda/Obsidian/Steam will have to fix this problem before I consider giving anyone my money. It looks like I might just have to wait for the GOTY edition to come out, when all these issues have been sorted out.

I installed from the disc just fine. Didn't have to DL anything what so ever. :shrug:

Come to think of it, I have installed the game twice, both times from the disc.

I tried what you suggested. I ran a clean boot described in the link, and this is what I experienced.

It said it was installing from the DVD, which I believe, because its a different size than what Steam was making me download. 4 installs for me now

*UPDATE*
OK so Steam just updated itself after I restarted windows. and I tried playing Fallout: New Vegas and it started right up. So they patched what ever issue I was having!!!

That (Finally!) worked for me, too. I used Steam with HA2 and didn't have to go through this...

Question:

When Steams decides for you that you are better off letting it do the thinking for you and download the game , where does it install the game? On the original directory you chose to install, or on a default directory?

Steam always install games under the folder where you told it to install Steam. For most users, that is c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\your-game-name-here.

That is just the way Steam works. Love it or leave it.

I went ahead and opened my collectors edition to take a shot with it. It's installing fine so far. It is installing from disc. The green light on the front of the drive is flashing so fast its almost solid and I can hear the disc spinning.

The only thing I did was pop the disc into my dvd drive, it fired steam up (it wasn't running) then asked for the cd key. Once entered it began the install and says from disc.

I know this may be a dumb question but are you guys sure you're installing from a dvd drive? And also, another dumb thing, maybe somehow being the collector's edition makes a difference.

Well, I have done further research, and going on 15 installs now, and here is what I have found:

Unfortunately, you can never really duplicate the first install since you never get a chance to reenter the CD key. But you can see that I duplicated the issue once anyways.

I also installed from disc. I think what's going on here is when people have steam already running steam will attempt to download the game. It was totally closed down when I put the disc in the dvd drive.

The Clean Boot was not done properly if you got that during Windows boot, or, the installer saw the previous install attempts and just tried to launch Steam to automatically resume that method. The second error message was due to the same thing but when you were trying to install from disk, it saw the local content and tried to launch Steam. That is what I wanted to know if it was something on your machine or with Steam. Hopefully this gets fixed if it is a repeatable issue.

I am going to close this thread as I think we have gotten to the crux of the matter. I will open a new thread with Cerebelums method to clear the cache to get the disk installs working again when they are pesky.
