Have you had problems leveling up?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:04 pm

Hello

I just joined cuz I'm very frustrated with the game. Not saying it's bad at all, just I can't pass anything anymore.
Everywhere I go, a cat, a huge [censored], a [censored] with lightning bolts, gollum or a friken teddy bear kill me with 1 swift [censored] slap.
I can't stand it anymore! I'm level 22! I look like a nordic god! CONAN's got nothing on me! WTFF???????

I'm going all around the map and I just don't know what to do anymore :/

I went to that mages place in the north where all the "magic happens" and then I had to pick up some stollen books. Ive had the most complicated time getting to the top of this place where they were being kept by a [censored] wearing cashmere, THE WOMAN THROWS 1 FIRECRACKER AND I died in 2 seconds! :o what is this bs? do I have to pull out a bazooka to make things fair?

please hint me..somehow..thank you very much.

PS: If I had a fire weapon I wouldn't say anything cuz I own with guns but I'm considering stop [censored] around with magic and get the archer thing going. I've read around the forum its much more efficient.

It sounds like you have been levelling up a myriad of things instead of focusing on one or two specifics. Also, have you been using your perks? And what difficulty level are you playing on?

Those would be the first three things that come to mind.

Yeah, I'm not really having that problem just wearing a dress. (Granted, I do use alteration to up my armor, but...)

To add to morgue's questions, what difficulty are you playing on?

This is clearly a defense problem...

Train in blocking. Learn smithing and improve your armor. Get a bow and kite enemies. Use trees and stuff to block magic. Try sneaking. Get a tank companion. Stuff like that.

Its because your stats on equipment svcks for being level 22.
And you probably don't have very high weapon skills?
Try lowering your difficulty.
EDIT: Umm because uhh my FUR ARMOUR is stronger then 70. ._.

Have you been putting your perks in the right places?? I don't mean to sound like a git but have you used your perks?
A friend of mine just selected either Magicka Health or Stamina when he lvl'd up and that was it, he came out the lvl up screen and he was having probs getting killed really quickly so i asked him what perks he had chosen and he said he thought they were picked for him automatically. I told him he had to choose where to put them....he was lvl15 at the time.

Make yourself some +resist gear. Carry a set of rings/amulets to swap at the very least, if you're having problems with magic users. You can usually buy better ones than you can make, as I've found +70 or 80% resist gear in shops at higher levels (you won't see that at 22 though). Try to engage with mages at a distance until you know what they use. I had the same experience clearing up a forsworn camp with no problem, then a mage one shot me with a fireball or something. I think shock is the worst. One guy zapped me twice at a distance, and that was it.

This is level scaling at work. My recommendation is: stick with your character. Don't go with archery because of this.

Level your two handed for your grand sword, invest in damage related perks. Also your heavy armor would help. You can level your magic along the way too but don't get too much spread there. Try to level these three evenly. But just play the game, don't grind. When you get the power you want from your three main skills, I guess around level 30, stop leveling. You don't have to level to enjoy the game, not in this game.

Alternately, you can go for smithing whatever but it won't help unless you race over level 50 and trivialize everything. But I don't recommend that route.

Fire resist stuff helps a lot in that particular fight.

I typically freeze her with the Ice form shout, ice spike her two summons, then handle her with whatever.

Don't listen to anyone telling you to "not use this" and "use bows instead", play the way you want to play. As for the difficulty, just turn it down or try focusing on one of your main combat skills to bring it up. Aside from that most other people also have difficulty with sabre cats and wizards at lower levels. Stick to bandits and Dragur until you feel confident to take them on. They're not going anywhere.

You're right, if you like guns then you'll probably like archery. But to make archery most effective you'll need to know how to make the bow powerful. Such as improving on Archery, Smithing, Alchemy, and Enchanting. I've always use archery for sneaking because it has additional damage with a sneak attack. If you use heavy armor with archery you should use Muffle for a sneak attack. The bow has useful perk at higher levels so if you're not doing to good with the bow at the start you'll find it very helpful when you reach the top.

A knight character is a pretty difficult build to play IMO. Not sure exactly what the OP is aiming for. The thing is you are splitting health, magicka and stamina three ways, and he may not be using ranged magic. In any case Destruction is a magicka hog, which is hard when you are splitting attributes. And what is he using for healing? You have to put a bit of effort into Alchemy to make it worthwhile. Otherwise you are relying on potions you find and buy, which can be heavy on the wallet.

TBH I think the best way to play a knight with magic is:
2H
Heavy Armor
Smithing
Enchanting
Conjuration
Restoration (dual cast Healing with Respite, Regeneration and Recovery)

Because then you are not using massive amounts of Magicka. Summons you cast and then forget, Restoration you just use Healing in both hands and the cost is not that high.

Otherwise I would say
2H
Block
Archery
Heavy Armor
Smithing
Alchemy

or something for a more pure knight, and forget about Magicka.

By the way, if you're doing the "locate books" quest for Urag in the Arcaneum, he can and WILL send you ANYWHERE, including into barrows that have dragon priests as end bosses at ANY level. I learned that one very unpleasantly at level 10. Had to completely flee and come back several levels later.

lol what an awesome community! that didn't take long to get so many replies! XD

first, thanks to everyone for the feedback.

second...um, I am trying to "master" different things..but for some reason thats what I thought was the point of the game. I never knew that you had to do either one or the other. maybe that's why I wasn't that strong? I dunno.

I always thought that leveling up the magic was a must since its got the healing and so many usefull things. I thought that evenutally you'd be spending much less magic and doing much more dmg with it if u kept doing all of it.
I guess I was very wrong.

I'm a good fighter. I use good blocking and I train hard but I guess I was missing the point of the game. that you can be 1 of something..not all of it.
I DUNNO, it looked like you were trying to become some sort of GOD OF WAR..and I thought, well, it makes sense to wanna be a master at everything, right?

Ya, I like archery for many reasons. one of them it's the closes thing to a gun in the game and I like guns.

all of the things you guys are saying made me thought of 2 questions.

1) WHERE DO YOU LEARN WHATS WHAT? in other words. how do you learn what can you do with alchemy, or enchanting? is there some manual somewhere or guide that tells you what does each thing do and where it takes you? how to create whatever?

2) HOW DO YOU TELL WHICH PLACES THROUGH OUT THE MAP ARE NOT AS HARD? to level up gradually and not go for the hardest enemies.

3) HOW DO YOU BLOCK A MAGE'S BIG [censored] BEAM OF DEATH? by the time I get close to it, [censored] fries me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS:

1) I have been using all the perks
2) I'm playing on the hardest difficulty, like all the games I always play. I love a challenge. and no, I wont give up. I'll figure it out and plow this [censored], so dont suggest me to back down, thanks.
3) I have been leveling mostly 1 hand, 2 hand, some magic, some arrow, heavy armor, block and a few others.
4) parhaps I have not been putting my perks in the right place, although I don't think I'm THAT stupid. :P I'll check on the game and get back on another reply thou.

anyway, thanks again for all of the feedback, suggestions, recommendations and info!

The key to leveling up is training and leveling up your skills. The only problem would be the money, if you want to you can use the hidden chest glitch. Right now im lvl 15 or so and have not done a single quest yet but even if you dont use the chest make sure EVERY TIME you lvl you go train. Usually at low levels 5 rounds of training will get you to your next level, if your a mage its even easier to lvl seeing as you can just go around casting muffle and get levels like crazy.

You probably can do everything if you try hard enough I guess, but in that case I would work hard on boosting Magicka and Magicka regen, because you have to cast lots of spells to raise skills. It is just a compromise because every point in Magicka is a point you can't put into your Health. If you reallly want to do this path you might want to turn down the difficulty.

Besides the game manual, characters in the game will tell you how to do crafting.

For how to deal with a powerful mage, it depends what skills you have. What my thief character does is, he finds some kind of cover such as a stand of trees. Then he pulls back his bow when he is in cover. Just after the mage has zapped the tree, he dodges out and fires an arrow. Then he goes back into cover. What my mage does is, she summons up an atronach to fight the mage. Then she helps the atronach fight by doing stuff like throwing lightning bolts or paralysis spells while the mage is distracted. If the mage turns on her, she runs away and hides, or uses a shout to avoid getting hurt. What my orc knight does is, he buffs the hell out of his offense and defense, goes into a berserker rage, and uses a shout to sprint up to the mage, and hits him with a hammer until the mage is dead. There are many different possible tactics, but one thing is to use the environment to your advantage.

The real key to true dominance in the early game is focus. Try picking 3 skills and only level those and do not level any others, going as far as not even reading skill books for any skill that doesn't level one of your 3 skills. Don't pick locks, the loot at low level is garbage anyway. Come back and open those chests later or be like my Nord warrior and never pick a lock ever. Just crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women.

For a warrior pick: 2 handed, Heavy Armor, Block. Take up some smithing at level 20 or so but you only need 50 points in it to make Steel Plate. Always check the alchemist for + Smithing potions, buy them when you find +50%. Save them. Get a Skyforge Steel Greatsword, Steel plate armor, and then upgrade them with your +50% smithing potion.

Become Ethereal is very useful for closing the gap on enemy mages.

The Lord Stone is a good way to add some defense.

Again, focus your levelling. Jack of all trades is fun but save that fro later when you are better at the game because it is a much harder style of play.

There is also a difficulty slider ... (but that isn't as fun).

hey everyone. thanks for the feedback.
I've been following your advice for the past few days.
I turned the difficulty from MASTER to EXPERT after a few hrs of trying and realizing it was utterly imposible to win against
3 guys who can't be attacked in a single fashion that are so powerful they can blow me out with 2 strikes..even from arrows.

I dunno what the [censored] is going on with this game, but its not making any sense.
the quest im in, is one of the very first quests that came up that ive ignored, the one where you are tried out for the COMPANIONS.
you go to some cave with FALKAS or something and start beating people up.
their strikes take over 200 DMG.

WTF? i have 260HP, 150M AND 160ST

anyone cares to explain wtf is going on?

One basic issue is.... yes, you can try to do "every skill". But the more you spread yourself out, the weaker all of it is. "Jack of All Trades, Master of None"

I did a many-skills character as my first one... but it still wasn't "all". It was around 10-11. I didn't try to do any magic beyond Healing, and never put any points into Magicka. And that still made things a bit harder than if I'd just done a generic "fighter" with four skills that were really built up.

Another possible issue is that you decided to try this as your first character (ie, still learning how the game's mechanics work) at max difficulty. Personally, if I were learning a new game, I'd start at normal difficulty, then go up when I was more familiar with how things work. But maybe that's just me.
