I thought it was a nice touch...actually missed them the first time I did the main quest. I think it might of been blizzard the whole way. I did find it annoying that a first generation dragon attacked me while n I had the text window up, then I forgot where the edge was and slid down the mountain.

Reading all of the tablets grants the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Voice_of_the_Sky effect for 24 hours, which prevents animals from either attacking or fleeing from the character. - UESP.

I read all the tablets and did get that effect - but it does wear off. I initially thought it lasted forever, hence why I just happily walked towards a bear thinking he would be my friend and drinking buddy. But no. He had other plans.
