Look for a lone Mammoth and climb a boulder to shoot it from. (make sure you have quiet a few arrows.

Even if you use it alot it's slow to level. So pay for training when you can and find a spot to sit where your target can't get to you with a lot of iron arrows and spam with arrows. Make sure it something that will try to get you and not run away, troll because they self heal is best.

If you find yourself with a shortage of arrows put some in a thieves guild member's pocket and wait for him to shoot at the targets [it works with guards too be the thieves shoot faster]. Just give them one arrow and with patience you'll end up with hundreds.

I'm rolling with a Bosmer archer and she is at Archer 84 now. Choose the Thief Stone so that archery skill levels 20 percent faster. Also, before heading out to slay bad guys, be sure to get the Well Rested bonus. Take on some Death Lords, giants, mammoths, bears, etc and it'll level fairly quickly. I had to get in the habit of pulling out the bow first rather than the sword and shield. When the enemy gets within melee range, I go ethereal and then switch to the sword. I haven't paid for training yet.

That power and quick shot are great!

It also helps to have a high Sneak skill. It may cause more damage but you don't get chased as much. My Archery is 100, I got it through using the Thief Stone and just walking around all the roads killing everything from bunnies to dragons.

Try paying for training, or enchanting rings or circlet or armor with high archery damage so you can have more critical hits with arrows to raise your level.

I'm at 90 at lvl 40. It seems to level up constantly and I'm finding that it levels faster than one or two handed. Turning up the difficulty should help.

for a few free training lessons find Angi's Camp south-east of falkreath in the mountains. you can play her mini game and gain one level for each of her 6 games. i try and save her for higher levels when it takes a lot longer to gain xp.

there's also an archery skill book inside her cabin so you could gain possibly 7 levels of archery by visiting her

Archery is under the Warrior, not the Thief.

Easiest way to level is to have Aela follow you, pay for training, then take your money back through trading. It'll get you to 75 anyway.

Archery seems to level fast. And if the OP can kill a giant with one shot, then what could the problem possibly be?

I'd have to agree, if you can 1 shot a giant that's your problem.

I noticed that archery levels too slowly in my game also. It only takes one or 2 shots to down the enemy most of the time and if you don't kill them quickly, you end up going to melee. So in normal game, very few shots get fired.

But training is free up to level 50 with Faendal as follower or level 75 with Aela as follower. After that, Niruin at Thieves Guild will get you to level 90. He is not a follower so it will cost you a lot of money, but money is not an issue to most people who play thief characters.

Leveling depends on how much damage you do to your target as well as how many shots you put into the target. Finding a large dumb target like mammoth is useful sometimes. But at high level, you might find it slow and frustrating and have difficult time finding enough mammoths. Another way to level up is using conjured creatures as target practice, or a follower. Make the follower wait and go far enough so that you are hidden, and hit them with sneak shot. Then wait for them to recover. They recover very quickly when they are out of combat.

Another very efficient way to level up is to find a strong immortal friendly character and sneak shoot them. I tried it with High Hrothgar priests and they are very good. They have a large amount of health and they recover quickly. I was able to level up 82 to 83 in 5 minutes by continuously shooting high damage sneak shots. Another place that's good is at Dark Brotherhood hideout, I heard. But I haven't tried that myself.

In my game my female Breton can 2-shot Giants with the 3x sneak attack bonus. I have the difficulty set on Adept though. I also have a lot of points in enchanting and smithing. Truthfully, I have no problem with becoming overpowered because that is exactly what I intend to do with her.

Sneak attack from archery, in my experience, is stronger than any spell, or any melee attack, except maybe a melee attack with daggers (x6 bonus?) which I have not tried.

I have one-shotted Blood Dragons with a potion, enchanting, smithing, and a glass bow with x3 sneak attack, at Master difficulty.

You can get to 30x sneak damage with daggers. 15x perk later on the sneak tree and 2x glove you get from doing dark brotherhood quest. I haven't tried it myself but some people seem to really really enjoy backstabbing everything.

id love to hunt bunnies but they move to fast for me and i miss like 60 times and then reload because i don't want to track down all the arrows

It svcks that the description for wood elves says they are the best archers in Tamriel, but they get no bonus at all.

They do have +10 Archery when you start. But then again everyone can have Faendal as a follower to get to 50 within an hour of starting the character. That makes me wonder, with the starting bonus, is it much easier for Wood Elves to get to 100? Maybe the experience needed from 99 to 100 is equivalent to the amount needed for others to go from 89 to 90.

Also I have mixed feelings about using Faendal to level up. It feels like cheating sometimes. Other times, I'm just happy that I can get the free training. What do you guys think?

I always play a character who gets good at archery. It just doesn't make sense to me not to use archery and sneaking when exploring strange and scary new place, or when fighting a flying dragon. I tried to focus on melee combat with a couple of characters, but I keep going back to using archery.

Like Abacus said, there is the +10 skill boost on archery. I'd rather have the special effect be something directly related to archery though rather than animal control Animal control did come in useful at low levels against trolls, but I haven't used it at all in the upper levels. Off topic - maybe a chameleon effect (not invisibility) while outdoors in a forest.

Back on topic - use a low powered bow. Also, since my Bosmer's sneak is so high, enemies will run past her to get to her follower. As a result, she can keep her bow out longer, getting more hits and leveling a bit faster.
