I have tried various fire and ice combinations but I have not even seen a light beam. Any ideas??

Did you install the crystal first? Also if you messed with the buttons on the platform before you adjusted the light beams it may not work - happened to my first character on that mission.

Are you on a PC? If you're on a PC there's a known issue with our graphics.

There's a download available if you search the quest name and don't mind having a non Bethesda patch in your game. Otherwise there's a console command that just ends the chain right there so you can move on with the next step.

Likely you also cannot see Clairvoyance or some of the coolest visual effects in the game (at the College of Winterhold those pools of blue light are actually beams shooting up into the sky, for instance... and you may not know this but the floor inside lots of dungeons has mist/gas coming up from it.)

console command is setstage mg06 55 for exactly that quest and the patch can be found at http://www.enbdev.com

Good luck! As much as I hate patching my own game I'd rather do that than miss out on the amazing stuff I can see in full color every time I watch my roommate playing the game on his 360.

in order... put in crystal, lights appear pointing all over the room... frostbite and flames will adjust the lights (spellbooks are above you on a table if you don't have one or the other or both spells) until there's one light on each of the three lines of the ceiling... go up and adjust the rings where the lights are pointing until there's a light on each of the blue circles to complete the focusing...

and if you're on a PC you can try maddeningly forever, post to the forums and finally stumble on your answer yourself and use the console to finish the quest and move on.

There's a procedure on the Wiki to align the beams without being able to see them.

Some video card and driver combinations don't draw the light rays in the Oculory, causing the quest to be nearly impossible to complete. This problem can be solved be updating your video card driver. To complete the quest without being able to see the light beams, first move the green mirrors on the ceiling into their correct positions first - press the middle button 6 times (so the mirror moves 6 positions), the left one 1 time, and the right one 5 times. Then strike the crystal with several short bursts of frost ... this has to be only the novice level attacks ... E.g. It has to be 'Frostbite' or 'Flames' ... a higher destruction spell will not work as it does not focus the lenses. then Paratus begins talking and the quest updates.

ETA - sorry about the typos. Posted that from my phone.

It doesn't appear at night apparently.

Also when doing it use flames and frost (the damage per second ones) throwing balls will only move them to set places no matter how many times you do it you can't get it in the middle ground you need too.

this should help...ok there's 3 moving rings in the ceiling...and the beams each angle to a spot on the ceiling....only worry about one beam at a time...so use the frost and fire spells to move the beams but only worry about one of em at a time and when one of em hit a part of the ceiling then go and adjust the ceiling by using the button, until its lined up to the beam..then do the next beam...don't trying lining all 3 up at once.
