Hearthfire: A Reasonable Speculation

Post » Sun Jul 01, 2012 12:58 pm

I have a strong inkling that the Hearthfire DLC will focus on a conflict between the Nords and the Dark Elves. Perhaps it will push the boundaries into Velothis in Morrowind, perhaps it will be based within Skyrim, but I have a gut feeling. Here are my reasons.

1. When I hear Hearthfire, being the TES geek I am, the first thing that comes to mind is the Redoran Hearth.

Culturally, members of House Redoran (who traditionally have always warred with the Nords, since their ancient city of Blacklight is right across the mountain border from Skyrim) always had a hearth burning within their homes. There is a lot of symbolism here, it fits with the rugged/homey feel of Skyrim, and it rekindles a lot of old aggressions between the Dark Elves and the Nords, which is referenced A LOT throughout the main game.

2. The book series 2920, The Last Year of the First Era that gets referenced in relation to Hearthfire (although that may be a stretch, seeing as Hearthfire is just a month within that year) is very focused on the Dunmer. The whole story is focused around the interaction between their god Vivec and the Empire, specifically the Akaviri Potentate. The Akaviri already have a lot of connection to the Dragons, and the Dunmer are already in a very good situation for an interesting story, with all that's happened to them.

A three way conflict between the Nords, the Dunmer, and the Akaviri is interesting and grand enough for a DLC storyline of epic proportions, but not large enough to be told in an entirely new game. Plus, the Nords have fought the Akaviri, too. Conflict of interests abound, and lots of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." There is also the potential for a large land area surrounding Blacklight, which can easily be separated from the rest of Morrowind, due to the destruction that's happened there (and the mountains). If Bethesda wants to tell a great story that adds LOTS of new content, lore, and style to the game, while still maintaining the feel of Skyrim and immersing the DLC with the base game, this is the storyline that needs to be told.

Comments? Opinions? What do you all think?

I think HF is going to be all about the Snow Prince and the Falmer...I mean, there are tips on the latest patches pointing to that.

Or maybe they're for another DLC...I don't know.

According to the UESP, Hearths Fire, the month, is also associated with Nocturnals summoning day, on the 8th of the month.

I hope it has no relation.
I had enough Daedra already.

Also, Children's day in High Rock

**shoots self**

I'm hoping it's got to do with the Psijics though, and their 1st of the month ritual thing.

It's the Elder Scrolls. The Daedra are a fixture. Get used to it.

That's why they must be destroyed.

Looks richer in lore than Id expect from a DLC, this is a great idea and Id love to see something like this in a well built DLC, maybe for next year. I hope the next DLC takes a lot more time to be released.

It's a nice thought, but...Be realistic, and non-role-playee. They've been a thing since the beginning when they helped Jagar Tharn usurp the throne. Saying "no more Daedra" is like saying "get this peanut butter away from my jelly".

Besides...think of all the iconic items we'd lose if that came to pass...

No more Azura's Star...
No more Goldbrand...
No more Spellbreaker...
No more Skull of Corruption...
No more Volendung...
etc etc

So serious discussion and discourse is an impossibility with you...Alright, as long as we have that clear...

I'm here to discuss the possibility of destroying Akavir and Dunmer.
Not to discuss the immortality of Daedra.

The Dunmer are in no position to wage war against Skyrim, seeing as how their homeland is in the same state as Chernobyl, plus the Redoran got wiped out during the Red Year, along with every other Great House, Morag Tong, and every other guild in Morrowind.
I think "Hearthfire" has more to do with the fire that burns within the Dovahkiin's heart, his Dragon Soul. I think he learns to truly embrace it, and maybe even learns to transform into a Dragon (Bethesda does seem to love their transformations in Skyrim).

I don't think that Bethesda would let you turn into a dragon. But it would but quite easy to say that the dark elves have rebuilt some of their society and that they are now attacking skyrim for arable land or just cos they want out of morrowind. Sounds like a much more solid plot than most of Bethesda's previous storylines. I would hope that we would get more of the beast races in hearth fire because they are seriously underused in vanilla skyrim.

Dawnguard used a bunch of stuff from the game jam, so I expect Hearthfire will follow suit. Now if some lorehead could connect HF with what remains of the game jam, we might actually get somewhere.

I recently ran into a few Dunmer at Sarethi Farm who talked about returning home to Mournhold. I had been under the impression that Mournhold was destroyed, which makes me think that the fallout in Morrowind isn't as bad as we once thought. True, Vvardenfell's still a pit, but the mainland area is apparently not doing too shabby. Plus, if any Great House were to encompass both the prevailing spirit of the Dunmer and the harshness of the time period, it's House Redoran. I can really see the scattered remnants of the other Houses rallying under a new Redoran banner, which would be a nice resurgence for them, since House Redoran was in such dire straits for so long :(

And hey, maybe a return to the old ways of slavery! There's your beast races

<3 love me some more Nocturnal. Really wish I could get a statue of her for my characters house. Dibella's golden bust is nice and all but Nocturna looks soo much better!

I was thinking it had something to do with the candle in Candle Hearth Hall.
