Heightmap problem

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:52 pm

Hi,

My heightmap window is completely white, and will crash if I click anywhere. I'm running Windows 7, 64bit.

Does anyone know a solution?,

Cheers.

I tried a lot with the height map editor and gave up. I made my heightmap in the FO3 GECK and imported it.

Sometimes it just goes pretty slow. If there is an option to close or wait, you may want to wait a bit longer.

It works for you? What operating system and system specs do you have please?

I don't get the "wait to respond" thingy.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply mez. I don't really know what I'm doing so I thought I would look into it a little before posting.

I have win7 32bit, nvidia geforce 8800gt. I've had fairly frequent problems where the render window and the rest of geck turn white, and i'm given the option by windows to close or wait and I wait. I think this happened in vista too, where the program just teases a crash but doesn't really follow through. When I edited landscape in the geck I used the landscape editor, which I know focuses on a smaller area. Now that I've looked into it more I think your problem is different.

Are you creating a new world or editing the existing one? It seems using the heightmap editor to edit the existing world would cause a lot of trouble. Have you gone through the Oblivion tutorial http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Heightmap_Editing

One of the things I looked into for fixing the heightmap editor is WaitToKillApp registry entry in windows, or HungAppTimeout or something similar. Perhaps someone else knows more about these, but maybe if you can let the geck continue thinking without windows forcing it closed it could help. I didn't get these to work (I didn't spend much time with it), but would be interested in hearing from others that might know more about it.

My last thought is that the whole thing is obsolete. You can go to world -> worldspaces in the pull down menus and add a .dds file for the heightmap. That should get your world started enough to use the landscape editor with a really big brush, and some of the other tools like 'world LOD/ generate terrain meshes.'

Yeah... it happens both with creating a new world space, and editing existing ones. Landscape editor works, but it is too small scale for what i want to do. Did you actually get the heightmap editor to work? Did you try? I've heard of it working for some people. Importing a heightmap also doesn't work, but I have found a work around, but it is a pain in the ass: Create a heightmap in the F3 GECK (for me it works fine in that version), then go into FO3EDIT, change the master from Fallout3.esm to FalloutNV.esm, go into FNVEdit and merge the plugins. Voila, now got a new heightmap in my plugin. Thing is, I usually decide to edit it later, which I can't do in the NV GECK, So I have to copy it to a F3 plugin and back to NV everytime I want to edit. It kinda puzzles me why Bethesda/Obsidian didn't get the heightmap editor to work. I mean, they use the GECK to create the game right? They'd have to get it to work. I don't think it's obsolete too. They'd just remove it and besides, it was a perfectly useful tool.

One addition. I have to use my notebook in the moment and the heightmap editor of the NV Geck is working perfectly fine on it. The differences between my main PC and notebook are OS (Windows 7/64bit / Windows XP) and graphic card (NVidia GT9800/Radeon X700). So I assume it has something to do with that.

I was not able to get it to do much. Maybe you can try an old video card off ebay or microcenter surplus or something? It seems to me Bethesda might prefer ATI. It would almost be easier to switch the video card, edit your heightmap, then switch video cards back rather than switching between gecks :)

I have win7 64 bit too. So it's probably either Windows 7 causing the problem or having a 32 bit OS that's causing it. Anyone have a 32 bit version of Win7 to test it with?
