Heimskr in Whiterun is not from Nirn

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 1:38 am

"They can barely tolerate out presence on Earth"
I had to listen to it a few times to make sure he wasn't saying Nirn.
Kind of emersion breaking. TES V being the first in the series to recognize Earth. seems strange.
I can ignore Onmund pronouncing Psijic Order "Fizzic Order" But saying Earth is just too much.
Is there any way Beth will change this? even if they remove the line I would be happy.

Well, we walk on earth. My guess is that Nirn is too mostly earth.
So Heimskr says that the Thalmor can't tolerate them on this earth/Earth.

And by the way, our planet is called Terra. So maybe Nirn simply means earth in some Aldmeri language or something?

Poster below me points something out.

If you listen to him with subtitles on, he says "earth", not "Earth" - so he isn't talking about the Earth we are living on.

Isn't "terra" just Latin for "earth?"

Exactly. When referring to something scentifically and internationally we often speak in Latin and therefore might call our planet Terra, or Earth.
I'm sure that the Argonians call the planet something different in their native tongue.

Doesn't Heimskr just mean earth as in soil? That's what I made of it anyway. (soil, lands, territory, whatever.)

Yes. Same as the Sun which is commonly referred to as Sol in astronomy.

Its poetic. The Altmer consider man lower than dirt and we walk on dirt(earth) and they find it abhorent that beasts such as man touch the same ground as them.

That's why it hasn't struck me; subtitles are on in my game. ;)

Tellus also a name for our planet. The difference mostly is that Tellus is a masculine while Terra is a feminine name.

I'm happy calling it Jorden, but this thread made me pull up the Latin name.
But like ladyonthemoon, I play with subtitles on. So I never thought about this.

Heimskr is using earth in the generic sense. What he is going on about is how the Thalmor want to get rid of Talos so they can get rid of mankind.

Its really not out of place to call any planet you might be on "earth". Earth can essentially be a synonym for "world" or "planet".

Actually, they chose the name "Heimskr" because it's old norse for "foolish", "Silly", and its modern variant in Icelandic is "Heimskur" which means "stupid". ;)

That Eorlund Grey Mane dude at the Skyforge is the guy that baffles me, for ages I wondered what the hell he was jabbering on about whenever I see him he goes Goths be praised!, I've been thinking to myself what the heck is he talking about, since when are there Goths in TES lore?.

Then I had subtitles on once and he supposedly says Gods be praised, though it still totally sounds like Goths be praised to me.

:lmao:

By the way why does he even say that? He is thanking the gods every time the player wants to buy something from him. The Grey-Manes must be in serious need of septims.

I knew the naming didn't have anything thing to do with MK. Just bolded it because most of the stuff Heimskr says sounds straight from his writings.

Only Goths, Ostragoths, Visigoths, etc, aren't found on Nirn. So clearly it must be the moody vampires.

Hate to really get fiddly with the details...

... BUT I'm pretty sure we call our planet "Earth" because it is made of "earth".

And so it sorta stands to reason that the dirt we refer to as "earth" probably wouldn't be called that either on Nirn.
In fact I'd go so far as to say the dirt should probably be called "nirn"... much as the planet itself is "Nirn".

=D

Afterall... this might sound damned stupid to you.... but it is the nature of sentient life to only begin naming things when there is more than one of them. As such, the first of them always tends to carry a generic term referencing what it is to the one who named it. This is why I always presume that in any fantasy or sci-fi... country / planet names, IF named thus by their inhabitants... probably just mean "home" or "the place where stuff happens" or something like that in their native language.
