Help! Any city changing mods cause instant CTD.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for reading this. I'm getting instant CTDs whenever I try to run any mods that modify the cities in the game. I've tried Beautiful Riften, Cities under Construction Whiterun and Beautiful Whiterun (not at the same time). I'm using BOSS and have a bashed patch for levelled lists.

Without these mods everything is running ok. The second I try to add one though I get a CTD on either creating a new game or loading up a save (not from inside a city).

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

EDIT: Open Cities causes a CTD just like the others.

To test properly you have to fully uninstall a mod (all files) AND go back to a save before a problem mod was introduced.

I'm curious if for you WATER and Claralux - if those are removed are you able to avoid ctds.

I'm experiencing this problem with Open Cities as well. I'll try disabling WATER and Claralux, see if that helps.

I'm getting near constant ctds near OC riften and I did have WATER and Claralux installed - so that is the overlap.

Not saying it will be it.

If it comes down to it though I'm not certain which I'm going to sacrifice on the alter of living without.

I am running both Water and Claralux without CTD's. Actually 5 minutes ago I was doing some quests around Riften and had no issues.

Uninstalling both WATER and Claralux did not alleviate the issue for me. My mod list for comparison purposes

How about reinstalling them? Something missing is probably more likely to cause a ctd than something that's changed... (in my opinion/experience)
Also, i'm not sure why I read load orders.... I'm always hoping to see something like "ctdwhenyouloadlol.esp" :P

I've been installing/uninstalling using NMM. I tried uninstalling Claralux and WATER and had no change. I read that mods that introduce map markers may cause crashes so i uninstalled those too but no luck.

It may be worth noting that I'm modding a fresh install of Skyrim and have been trying new games and test saves that have just left Helgen.

In your case, I see 3 possibilities:

1. The map markers mod is old and needs to be updated.
2. WATER should load after it.
3. The map markers mod is simply incompatible with city mods.

43 Automatic Variants.esp
Have you made sure these files are rebuilt when you add and remove mods? That's a critical step a lot of people forget about.

I managed to get the game to let me create a new character with Open Cities installed.

The first thing I did was uninstall the map markers. This alone didn't solve the problem, but upon deactivating and reactivating a couple mods at a time it seems that Expanded Wintherhold Ruins must have been causing my problems.

EDIT: Realized I also still had Claralux and WATER uninstalled. Attempting to bring these back in didn't cause a CTD, but I would have on a black screen when trying to start a new game.

Expanded Wintherhold Ruins has an outdated setup that uses an esm+esp to get around the old navmesh bug. As a result, it is no longer compatible with Patch 1.6 and needs to be updated. IT will continue to cause similar CTD problems with any mod in the future that also edits navmeshes until it gets updated.

The ESM thing isn't at all necessary for this mod at the size it occupies and the location it edits.

I run water with get wet and claralux and no problems. Sadly, I don't use any of he city mods you mentioned alongside them
