Help choosing race for back story

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:51 am

Hi everyone,

I've been restarting characters when they are around level 15. Not sure why but at that level I always decide I want to try something else.

I would like to start a new character but stick with him/her so I'll try to come up with a better back story and get into the story of this character a little more. I think that will help. So here's where I need help shosing a race/six that would fit this character.

My character is an orphan that was part of a travelling show (circus, freak show...). Going into Skyrim, the caravans for the show were attacked by a group of imperial soldiers. All were killed except my character who was captured and taken to the killing block (Here's where the story begins). My character lost all its family including the bearded lady and the knife thrower.

My character, in the show, was a magician/hypnotist mainly playing with people's mind. He also manipulated his environment quite well. He/she will therefore be quite well versed in illusion and alteration. He/she also practiced knife throwing with the knife thrower.

The character therefore has a lot of anger towards the Imperials but also has no money and no way to survive so will have to find his way. Other than a proficiency with illusion, alteration and knives, who knows where this person will go...

This brings me to my question for the lore experts (and the not so experts ;-)): what race would be logical for such a back story? Any thoughts?

What six do you see in this story?

Recommendations as to names?

Any other thoughts on this very short and not very original back story? any other ideas I can add to make this character more complete?

Thanks so much in advance for your help!!!

Unfortunately Altmer start with the highest illusion, but that doesn't fit at all. Argonians and Kahjiits fit the story well, outcasts and travellers, but Kahjiit aren't particularly magical, and Argonians only get a +5 to alteration, though their pick pocket bonus certainly fits the carnie stereotype.

Breton

Use your own gender. It is a little easier to play for long periods of time with someone you can identify with and that is easier to do with someone of your gender.

I'd either play as a female Khajiit or male Breton with this backstory.

Quite original though, I can't recall having ever seen a circus influenced character before.

I'd say Khajiit or Breton would likely fit best.

Either six.

Isn’t that how the mages guild started? A guy in the circus got accepted by the psjjic(sp) and the rest is Mages Guild history.

Pretty much, yeah. I've just never seen such a role taken up by a player before. It's quite a neat idea.

It was a band of troubadours, but that's close enough.

I'd say Khajiit, they're the most Infamous Race which makes it most common for them to be an Orphan and Freak show to others,
In Mixed Unit tactics, they have been known to use magic, as well as J'zargo mentioning a Mages guild in Elsweyr so Magic isn't out for them.

Gender doesn't really matter, that's your choice :o
The name i'd Assume since he's an Orphan he wouldn't have the Usual type of Khajiit names with the apostrophe after the first or second letter

Thanks everyone for recommendations. Arturo il Magnifico left Black Rock to find fortune in the North. He traveled with a group of people putting on shows where they were wanted. He was proud to call these people his family.

They unfortunately met with death and he was taken prisonner.

I look forward to telling his tale.

I'd say take whatever race suits the story best (Khajiit in my opinion). You will find the miniscule boosts to skills only make a difference in the early game. In the long run, you should go for role-playing as you can become anything you want with any race.
