Help me decide which version to buy

Post » Wed Sep 28, 2011 11:40 pm

Hey all,

Long time id fan (since Commander Keen and Wolf3D) and Bethesda fan (since Daggerfall) here... I'm faced with a tough choice concerning Rage.

In the past I never would've even considered buying a console version of a game I could have on PC, particularly an id game. I played Doom and Quake etc on PC and I'd love to do Rage the same way, trackball and keyboard in hand.

Lately though I've been getting disgusted with PC gaming, never thought the day would come. All the Steam verification, inability to play without being online (bit of a problem for those of us who go out on submarines for months at a time...) plus I got an Asus G73jh not too long ago and upgraded the 6gigs of RAM it came with to 8gigs and I know I'm spoiled and I know it's a laptop (my first) but I have been a bit annoyed at how certain games run on it, well mostly Deus Ex: Human Revolution. All of this sort of lead to me deciding to focus more on consoles, or at least playing aPC games like they were console games. I use a xbox 360 controller and I pump my laptop video to my LED Samsung and play that way on a lot of stuff.

Well I'm getting too in depth there with background stuff, I'll cut to the chase:

What I"m considering is grabbing it for PS3 (might've done 350 but I heard about the disc swapping shame though because I do prefer the 350 controller for fps)

so do I do the unthinkable and get an id shooter for console? and buy the PC version later when it's cheaper? how do you think it would run on my PC? I'm pretty spoiled with regard to resolution I like my 1920x1200

I just have my doubts about how it will run on my laptop, which runs Crysis 2 amazingly well btw just as one example. I know id programs their stuff very tight but... yea, I might be to the point of just craving that simplicity that a console brings.

I just wanted some thoughts.

The 3 platforms are equal in terms of play.

But I recommend on the PC.

PC! It goes down to gameplay and if you are used to id games with a PC, I wouldn't change that. Either way I don't think you can go wrong, and if your machine is good enough for Crysis 2 i'm sure it will be good for RAGE.

You have enough machine for the game. if you have the game up to date you can take Steam into offline mode for as long as you want.

Go with what makes you feel comfortable.

Why does the disk swap bother you..?

last time I was out on the sub I learned that Steam demands you log in to get into offline mode if it goes without connection for several days

Hi, I'm in the same boat  almost 20 years of PC gaming but don't like the trend with DRM :(
That's why I buy new games mostly for PS3. Rage already pre-ordered for PS3 and the only PC Game this year so far was Witcher 2.

You're laptop certainly would be fast enough to run Rage with high settings. But except resolution and Anti-Aliasing the game shouldn't look much different than the console versions.
Models, Textures etc are the same on each platform. And gameplay is the same on each, too. So it probably doesn't really matter which version and there is no wrong/worse choice, only which makes you more comfortable with.

I would chose what your guts tell you.

I'd say it depends a lot on how much interest you have in mods and stuff like that. I had a 360 for awhile but realized I was mostly buying games I could get on the PC anyway. And I prefer the PC control scheme when it comes to shooters. But I can see your reasons, though I doubt you will have any issues getting the game to run on your laptop since they have stressed how it scales well and given how low even the "recommended" requirements are for the PC version.

I recommend the PC version. The system requirements is quite low, and it supports Xbox 360 controller.

Then Xbox, id has been demonstrating RAGE on Xbox since last year, so you can bet it's very reliable version.

Avoid PS3 version until graphics comparison is up. I'm not on system wars, but there are some negative previews on PS3 version of the game.
