raise stamina for added carrying weight and if you dont want to pay off the guard or go to jail. pretty much raise sneak, lockpick, and pickpocket

like mine:
khajiit, sneak at all times, dual, sneak perks with arrow and dagger and, of course, dual.
murder?
daggers, bows, soul trap, light armor, alchemy.

that's it.

My main character is a thief, I went with a pretty typical build.

Archery
One-handed
Block
Smithing
Light Armor
Sneak
Lockpicking
Alchemy

I use the Lady stone. Split health and stamina equally. I have gotten into Pickpocket since about level 50.

smthing as a thief is very wrong, for me, since, my other charactes will take care of smithing later.

Archery
Sneak
Light Armor
Lockpicking
Pickpocketing
Silent Casting & Invisibility from Illusion
Conjuration to summon up additional help if needed

Maybe Alchemy, Blacksmithing, and Enchanting maxed combo to create great gear.

No. Smithing is just like Alchemy and Enchanting a secondary skill group that you can add to any build. You can pick any of the three or all of them in addition to the primary skills. People have already summed up what are the primary skills for a thief. Smithing only gives a thief build a deeper character. You can go as far as to add Alteration (Detect Life, Telekinesis) and Illusion (Muffle, Invisibility) to a thief build. And you can use Conjuration spells for creating distractions...

Smithing gives a nice punch, but I started on Expert and switched to Master. Not essential by any means.

If you want an effective game build for stealth, take archery. If you want to roleplay an actual thief, take speechcraft instead.

I don't really see any reason to take any speechcraft or lockpicking perks. They help early on but become a waste later. Likewise with most of the pickpocketing tree, except the ability to reverse pickpocket poisons is phenomenal, especially for an alchemist. My sneak based character uses swords and daggers as a backup but I haven't really put many perks into the blade tree.

I play a thief, but I was hope you all could help me understand the logic behind the archery aspect of being a thief. I see a lot of thief builds include it, and I must say I use it a little, but I don't know why it's so important within the thief build. can anyone explain this?

I guess it comes from D&D.

Is the archery thing more about the player character's desire to be a good sneak?

Sneak and archery go together like beer and pizza.

I imagine that since thief characters are typically lower-ish in health and not usually magically inclined, going to-to-toe with a lot of baddies and critters can end... painfully. Archery kind of fits the niche of a reliable way for stealth character to not be helpless in a fight. Even more so when paired with some nice poisons from alchemy.

My thief uses

Sneak - only on left to muffled movement only on right to deadly aim.
Archery- all of it
Lockpickin- only up center then branch to treasure hunter
Pickpocket- only up to poisoned and extra pockets
Blacksmithing- only arcane smithing
Speech - have not decided yet
Alchemy- most likely all of it
Light armor - have not decided yet
One handed- have not decided yet

I like beer and pizza. My thief will have to do some serious thinking about this. I have developed archery a little, but I've just really focused much much more on being a blacksmith first and a thief second.

as a thief you should not have to take any weapon skills, you should not be getting caught if you're a thief

True, but as the Dragonborn you have certain other requirements that you need to live up to (if you're choosing to play the way it leads). You can't get very far in this game without chopping stuff up.

a good thief never needs a weapon, he is fast on his feet and is rarely seen. if soemthing happens he takes the route of the thief of virtue, improvising a non-violent solution (the thief of virtue...stole someones virtue as his method of escape)

well he asked for a thief, not a dovakiin thief, big difference

Does a thief need archery? No, but it is good against dragons and when you have no other option but to kill. Skeletons and such can be killed without any hassle and with just a bow and one does not need to sneak up on them first.

One can use a bow to shoot at objects and thereby move them (i.e. shooting a soul gem from a socket). Some lamps can be shot down and then they will set the ground on fire. It does however not require the Archery skill tree for this. It is more of a role-playing element.
