help! steam ate my save games!

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 10:31 pm

When I start up the game the only save games available are old ones. My most recent ones don't even appear, but they are in my save game folder.

Turn off cloud sync for Skyrim and see if that helps. Also, your title could use some work.

"Saves not showing in menu" or something is a bit better.

Edit:

I just saw your second pic. You see the .tmp after the .ess in the file name? That's the problem.

.tmp is for temporary files. Now we just need to track down what is doing that.

First off, try renaming those files and just delete the .tmp. Make a backup of those files (with the .tmp in place) first just in case things don't go too well.

steam doesn't delete save games.

Try moving them to a different folder, load the game, save, exit and then paste them back into the directory

I assume that means it failed on the others, then?

Something happened to my skyrim.esm and update.esm files. I suspect that Valve did another stealth update that went wrong.

I validated my install, and now when I open NMM, none of the mods show up under the plugins screen, however, they all show up on the mods screen . I haven't actually launched the game to check on saves yet.

Could you be more descriptive? I'm having a hard time following you there.

Non of his mod .ESMs or .ESPs are being displayed on the Nexus Mod Manager but it still lists them as being installed.

In that case, that's a question to the NMM folks.

That all depends on if they're showing up on the launcher.

Now we're back to my original question. >_>

Yeah, I'm going to need a better description here. Looks like my wording issues are causing problems again. :P

The steam launcher data files screen is as blank as the plugin page from nmm. So there are issues from both ends.

Uh, the Steam Launcher is supposed to be blank save for the games and manually added programs.

Do you mean the Skyrim Launcher? There's a big difference, to be honest.

I launched it from steam, but yeah whatever, that data file is blank as can be, no mods installed anymore. Which is probably why the plugins page for NMM only has skyrim.esm and update.esm.

Ok, now things are making more sense. Go to your Data folder, are there any ESPs or ESMs there?

Yes they are all in my data folder. When this all started a couple of hours ago the only 2 files missing were the skyrim.esm and the update.esm.

It looks like the saves did not disappear when I start the launcher and look at the load screen. So my installed mods are just not showing up.

Missing from where, the Data folder or the listings?

Sorry, I'm not the best at interpreting wording and stuff.

I explained that in post number 8 both that those two files were now awol and that I suspected that it was caused by yet another stealth update that probably failed. That is how they went awol when 1.5.24 came out. The patch failed to install and in the process steam deleted both of those esm files, which is why I suspect that happened today.

If that is what caused them to disappear this time.

This time something else went bad too, because my installed mods are not showing up as installed by the skyrim launcher nor are they showing up in NMM as being installed on the plugins page.

Ok, that's what I've been asking... >.<

Anyways, verify the files. That should help.

Also, I don't think there was an update recently. Far as I'm aware, 1.5.26.05 is still the latest version. Otherwise, there'd be a bunch of posts about it among other things.

I believe I stated that I already did that. I seriously doubt that doing it a second time will help.

Nope, you didn't.

I'd say try it again.

However, it sounds like you may need to reinstall if verifying the files failed on you.

Verifying the files re-added skyrim.esm and update.esm. Why would doing it again take care of the issue I'm having with my installed mods not showing up as installed?

I'll try it, but I have a feeling that it won't be much different than someone bashing his/her head against a wall and expecting different results.
