Help me update to 1.3 without Xbox live...!

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 10:02 pm

Hello there

So since 'upgrading' to a new netbook with Windows 7 Starter, it seems that I can no longer use internet sharing to connect to Xbox live via my computer. So I currently have a non-Xbox live enabled Xbox.

I found this discussion about updating Skyrim using a USB memory stick (and also various sites on the internet suggesting the same thing)

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1316520-how-can-i-get-the-update-without-using-xbl-dashboard/page__hl__skyrim%20xbox%20live%20update

Which seemed an ideal solution... but I've been trying for two days now with no success. I've got a 4GB stick, and have tried:

Using the USB stick with just the most recent PAL update
Using the USB stick with all of the PAL updates
Using the USB stick with all of the updates for all regions
Clearing the xbox cache with various combinations of the above

I'm at a loss for what I'm doing wrong. If anyone has successfully managed this I'd love to know how you did it.

Weirdly I had no problems downloading the dashboard update and installing that from the memory stick...

Any help and advice would be much appreciated!

OK... so today I have also tried

Clearing the game cache (LB + RB + X)
Moving all of my savegames to the USB stick as well as the update
Moving everything to my USB stick then transferring everything on the USB stick back to the Xbox HDD
Using different USB ports on the xbox
Saving the title update in different places on the USB stick
Running the xtaf program as an administrator

But still no luck.

I'm really frustrated because I bought a USB stick specifically to do this, it sounded so straightforward...

Well, after several dozen attempts over the course of a week or two, I've actually managed to update after bodging together some half-baked incomplete instructions from several different sites.

How to Update Skyrim without Xbox Live...

Download the Xbox dashboard update and install via USB stick as per http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-360/system-updates/system-updates-info (section entitled 'Copy to a USB flash drive')

Format your USB stick from your Xbox to act as a memory unit

Using your Xbox, transfer a single savegame for Skyrim from your Xbox to the memory stick - this ensures some of the memory stick is set up as Skyrim data storage

Go to http://www.xbuc.net/? and download EVERY Skyrim update (not just the most recent one for your region - ALL of them); also download the XTAF program (linked to from the XBUC FAQ page)

Using XTAF, open your Xbox USB stick. You should see Cache Partition/Cache, and Data Partition/Content/E0083AE2A7B0D/425307E6/00000001

Create a new folder under 425307E6 called 000B0000

Using XTAF, inject ALL of the Skyrim updates into the new 000B0000 folder, AND into the Cache Partition/Cache folder

Close your USB stick once you're sure the files have completed copying

Plug the USB into the Xbox

Clear the Xbox cache from the dashboard

Start Skyrim, and immediately hold down LB, RB and X and keep held until the Bethesda logo appears to clear the game cache

After doing all this, I checked the bottom left corner of the System (Start button) menu to be greeted with.... 1.3.5.0

Akatosh be praised. I hope this may help out anyone else struggling to get this working! :-)
