Hey, look everyone! Whiterun is real.

That's not cgi. Watch the extended edition dvd special features. They BUILT that on the hill for the film and then tore it down. It's no longer there. It was not cgi at all.

They got permission to build it so long as they left it exactly as they found it. They took up the grass on the hill and built greenhouses for it and put it all back after shooting.

That was for the Hobbit holes, not a massive city/fort.

Meh. Watched those overly long movies a few years back. Didn't really make the connection since they aren't that similar. Guess that's neat for people who notice that stuff though...

Actually I do remember that, pretty sure Edoras, or at least a large portion of it was built, I think the rest were miniatures/CGI.

Um, no. There is an entire section of the Two Towers showing the physical construction of Edoras. The construction took 3 weeks and they shot for 3 days and tore it down. That entire city on Edoras is real. The inside of those small houses is where the cast had lunch between shots. Watch the dvd.

That picture looks exceedingly CGI, it's been almost a year since I watched the special features in that bloated box set but that fort definently look fake to me (it might just be the quality of the picture)

There are too many special features to watch in one go but I will try to find the bit on the sets. The picture in the OP makes it look fake.

Don't see it. I mean they look alike, but then again so do many of the towns from medieval history that had the same function... Whiterun is also far heavier fortified then Edoras, is build more on the same level with just Dragonsreach standing on top of it...
It's not just the town, Whireun hold is identical to Rohan, the landscape, the colouring, the grass, the hills, the mountains, the people, the buildings etc, the capital is in the same location and the tow is very similar, even the inside of Dragonsreach is exactly the same as the inside of King Theoden's hall, watch the movie.

It's on the second disc of the two towers dvd extended edition. The second special features disc, that is. So the 4th on the set.

It shows Jackson and producers flying over the plains to find the perfect place, then they find that hill. Construction soon follows. They show them ripping the grass up and putting it in the greenhouse because they were required by law to leave it exactly as they found it. Good watch.

The grand hall was all real and authentically built, as the other small buoldings were built to look good from only 1 angle, the rest was cgi'd in. but the majority of it is real.

Its just a bad photo. That set was actually left up for a while in NZ for tourists to visit and wander around.

Will do, although I always end up spending hours glued to the TV whenever I try to watch just one part :D

Well, both Edoras and Whiterun are based on Viking culture so what I expect.

Tolkien was inspired by quite a lot of mythology and ancient-modern history, he did however create his own world from these inspirations, Bethesda instead stole a town already created in the fantasy world almost down the positioning of the houses. I've encountered you [censored] before, refusing to accept that the developers of a game you love ripped off large portions of their game from film and literature. It's true, look at that picture and look at Whiterun, then compare it with every other hill fort/town you have ever seen, there is very little variation between Bethesda's Whiterun and Jackson's Edoras.
on the subject of LOTR easter eggs...

if sky is the opposite of earth, and rim the opposite of middle... the entire province could be a nod at middle earth.

Or perhaps Skyrim means rim of the sky and refers to it being a mountainous area.

Markath, if anything, is Helms Deep.

The Imperial City in Oblivion is vaguely reminiscent of Minas Tirith.

Only the close-up sets were actually built, that long range shot of the city on the hill was entirely CGI. Says so on the Extras DVD that came with the video. As far as Whiterun/Dragonsreach being a ripoff of this, that is a load of bull. That's as silly as saying Philadelphia is a ripoff of New York.

Sigh, you're acting like I'm grasping at straws here, if you have seen The Two Towers it should be obvious to you that Rohan/Edoras was the inspiration for Whiterun.

These are just a few of the other forums posts I just found on this topic through a quick Google search, can all of you stop treating me like I'm insane now, it's not like I'm saying Falkreath looks like Mordor, but seriously, stop being in denial and realise that maybe Bethesda drew inspiration from LOTR.
