High Level Characters

Post » Wed Jul 18, 2012 5:19 am

I just noticed (well, actually a while ago, but I just feel like making a thread about it now) That it is very hard to get to a high level without either grinding or becoming a jack of all trade. On my first character, once I got my main skill to 100 (2 handed) I leveled up excruciatingly slow, and by the time I got my other commonly used skills to 100, 1 handed, block, and heavy armour, I didn't level up at all. I stayed stuck at level 37. Later, when I tried to get the level 50 achievement (I'm kind of an achievement [censored]) I had to grind archery, smithing, and light armour until I hit the 50 mark. Basically I had to switch my playstyle from a barbarian to an archer. Does anyone else find this annoying? This pretty much limits my character to mid level content, (which isn't necessarily bad, imo, but still)

Leveling up is fun. When you level up after your build is finished, you get more health, more magicka and more perks. It generally makes your character stronger. It makes your character stronger faster than it makes your opponents tougher. The game generally gets easier as you level up more. You can splurge on the perks that you wanted to get but couldn't.

Yeah, you change your play style to level up, but you can always rely on your super strong core strength when things get hairy. Also, it's sometimes fun to try new things.

Well, part of the reason I don't like leveling up was because of the scaling, at level 37, daedric and dragonbone armour still had this mysterious appeal I liked, so did some of the unique creatures like Storm atroches, but now I see them all the time, and they have lost their appeal

I start out working on the skills I want that character to have, put the perks on those ones, the training on the ones I am not interested in. Then yes each of my characters goes through a bit of a change as they get their chosen skills to 100, they adopt a different style. Most still have a bit of individuality and eventually return to what they are best at. Especially if they face a challenge they will forget about levelling up what they are weakest at and go with their best. I will probably only get one character to 81, the second is not that interested in being an over achiever and the third character is more trouble than he is worth and will be lucky to last to 50.

I know what you mean. On my first char Daedric equipment was my ultimate goal if you will-it was the thing I most strived for. Now I see it as just another good sword/bow/armour piece that I want.

Yeah of course it goes slower, but that's how it was designed. You only level with the skills you use. If you don't use half of the skills you don't level. This usually prevents my characters from getting high levels, but I'm okay with that.

If your on PC there is a mod out there that lets you reach level 300 for each skill so that makes it a bit more fun.

I don't know, that seems like cheating to me, I mean, everything would do massive amounts of damage,

Well yeah, but it takes a very long time to get to that level. I guess it's a mater of preference, personally I like it because I can still advance and I really don't mind the game getting easier once I get more powerful. As long as it remains difficult at the start I'm okay with it.
