My favorite areas to hike are in wooded areas. It's nice stumbling into an area I didn't know about before. A secluded stream. A waterfall. An interesting rock formation. It's one of the reasons I like playing Elder Scrolls games so much. It's like hiking, only with a better chance of running into bandits, and fewer bug bites.
Sometimes, I'll listen to an MP3 player while hiking. One day, I got the brilliant idea to plug in music from the Elder Scrolls and hike around. The end result was brilliant! The majesty of light filtering through the trees and some of the breath taking vistas was amplified to the tune of TES exploration music! I half expected to run into a bunch of goblins or an imp behind a tree.
In one instance, the song switched to a battle theme, and it was like my instincts instantly responded. My brain expected trouble, and I found myself scanning the trees for potential danger. Never found any, but that would have been an interesting coincidence if I had run into a bear or something. After that, I just put exploration music into it's own folder and listened to that.
Later, when the weather gets nicer (It's been unseasonably nice the past few days. Just went to the park with my wife and son. It's a cozy 66 F today.) I might put dungeon music into it's own folder and go check out some of the caverns nearby. I don't think the rangers would appreciate me carrying a flaming torch down there, so a flashlight will have to do. I expect awesome times.
