Hiking in the Woods.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:05 pm

I like to hike. There's plenty of opportunity to do so where I live. (The vicinity around Lake Shasta, Northern California. Great place to live. Sad place to work. Here's an example: http://www.californiafishingonline.com/Shasta%20Lake%20California6.jpg)

My favorite areas to hike are in wooded areas. It's nice stumbling into an area I didn't know about before. A secluded stream. A waterfall. An interesting rock formation. It's one of the reasons I like playing Elder Scrolls games so much. It's like hiking, only with a better chance of running into bandits, and fewer bug bites.

Sometimes, I'll listen to an MP3 player while hiking. One day, I got the brilliant idea to plug in music from the Elder Scrolls and hike around. The end result was brilliant! The majesty of light filtering through the trees and some of the breath taking vistas was amplified to the tune of TES exploration music! I half expected to run into a bunch of goblins or an imp behind a tree.

In one instance, the song switched to a battle theme, and it was like my instincts instantly responded. My brain expected trouble, and I found myself scanning the trees for potential danger. Never found any, but that would have been an interesting coincidence if I had run into a bear or something. After that, I just put exploration music into it's own folder and listened to that.

Later, when the weather gets nicer (It's been unseasonably nice the past few days. Just went to the park with my wife and son. It's a cozy 66 F today.) I might put dungeon music into it's own folder and go check out some of the caverns nearby. I don't think the rangers would appreciate me carrying a flaming torch down there, so a flashlight will have to do. I expect awesome times.

haha, nice ;) this is kind of unrelated but I listen to really epic and intense orchastra/opera music while I run and lift weights, I like to pretend I'm a gladiator or something training for a huge game

If I tried that, a swan or something would creep up on me when I can't hear it, and attack.

Ha! That's a good idea, I've listened to Explore_09 a couple times outside the game too. I could totally see that as being something fun to do when hiking. Ambient music in general would probably good for that type of thing. Sounds like some 800% slower Justin Bieber tracks are in order!

Walking in the woods at night with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZMUhXNr7sw&feature=related should be interesting.
Two friends and I decided to wander in the woods with oil lanterns at night, right after watching the Blair Witch Project. It was very... well let's just say that your imagination runs wild in these circumstances. :D

This reminds me when I was camping with friends, we decided to go wander in the woods nearby for a hike to find logs.. And, of course, it's always much more fun not to follow trails.

We saw a cabin above some rocks. Upon climbing it, we noticed it was abandoned. Inside were ustensils and 5 years old newspapers. A coffee pot, still sitting on the table. Lots of logs.

Upon leaving the cabin, we noticed that there was a clearing nearby. There were benches surrounded by overgrown grass facing a big rock in which was a statue of the Virgin Mary. There was a fallen sign on the floor with a christian saying I don't remember.
And on top of that rock was an abandoned priest's lodge. Inside were photos of the priests living there and christian paintings on the walls. Also a diary where pilgrims would sign when they'd visit.

It was a very interesting hike and somewhat spooky. :) Especially since we returned there at night with flashlights.

When I get off this island, I want to do some forest walking one night while listening to music from Diablo, Elder Scrolls, and some other games. Maybe Ill see a mage falling out of the sky, or run into a camp of fallen!

... or be approached by Lucien.

In our world, we call him Santa Claus. He knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you're awake. He's knows if you've been murdering and watches you in your sleep...

I have done this only with classiscal music.. We have many parks and hiking trails in my city.
Took the mp3 and a park about five miles from work. At a really mellow point in the music, came to a turn, went round it, and found myself in a gigantic bowl shaped depression full of cypress, gracefully curving oak, and millions of ferns carpeting the ground. It was beautiful, timeless.

When you happen upon these types of areas suddenly just as the music swells, it's a really neat chance effect. It's like having a soundtrack for reality.

To be safe I always just have one side of my headphones on. But I too listen to Elder Scrolls music when I go walking. Glad to see I'm not the only one!
