hogwarts Easter egg?!

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:18 am

i know the collage of winterhold isn't nearly big enough to be hogwarts...but the people inside it are so reminiscent of the various characters...

i mean :

The three apprentices - Ron-Harry-Hermione?

Toldir reminds me strongly of a sort of short-bearded dumbledore , what with his voice and peaceful aura , and Mirrable is like a 30 year old professor mcgonagall

then their is Entheir is he like Mundungas fletcher , always sneaking in banned items ...

to be honest , every single member reminds me of a hogwarts personality strongly , i honestly think beth based the characters on ones from the harry potter series - like some sort of giant easter egg

Ok ill admit Ancano isint exactly voldemort *gasp* (you said his name!) but then , beth have never really been able to quite pull off epic magical battles and such ...wow that would be so epic if the thalmore tried to take over the collage ( for the eye of magnus ) and there was some giant battle between the thalmore wizards and the collage wizards...

and as for the staff and eye of magnus... the hallos anyone ?

If your going to post thoughts please no nasty comments about how i love hp - yes i am a massive fan ok? I have been since the first book x

what are your thoughts , and i'd LOVE to hear which characters from HP you think are inspired in the collage's npcs

I see where you are getting at, but maybe you are thinking a little too deep into it. As for the Staff of Magnus, it has been around in past games.

you must mean morrowind , i never played Tes 3 :nope:

and yes i know i think to deeply about this , but its fun , thinking about the collage as a sort of miny hogwarts where you have to study and learn magic and such :)

although i hate arcano , grr he makes me mad

I don't really see any similarity. Since when did cat people attend hogwarts? I honestly think you are thinking WAY too much into this. Those similarities are extremely vague. The hallows were copied off LOTR anyway. Sauron's soul in the ring anyone?

You know the college did kinda remind me of hogwarts a bit. Although Arcano seemed more of a Snape than a Voldemort to me.

The only connection I can see involving both Hogwarts and the Mage's College would be that they are both learning establishments focusing in the arcane arts. I believe you may be grasping at straws for the rest of your connections.

Ancano is definitely the Minister of Magic, always poking his nose in Hogwarts affairs. (OR HE'S UMBRIDGE!!!) (OR FILCH!!!)

Chamber of Secrets, Polyjuice Potion...
I knew some one would mention that, but that doesn't count. I don't remember dark elves or wood elves who attended Hogwarts either. The OP is clutching at straws.

Thats because you are trying to draw exact connections, which you wont find. No [censored] there aren't elves in Hogwarts, but this is TES we are talking about which DOES have elves and cat people and lizard people.

That being said, I do believe there is no real connection to Harry Potter. Its just a case of looking at things too hard and seeing what you want to see. Like the parallel between Rebecca Black's "Friday", and the assassination of JFK.

Rebecca Black's "Friday" and the assassination of JFK.

ahh , but there is
a connection to that ;)

and i find it deeply amusing that even on the sillyist thread like this people still are determined to revel in misery and irratablenese ( not a word but hey!)

well , the minister for magic ? could be something in that ...although the psjic order are more like the ministry of magic because they are also constantly interfering

great posts though!

No, you're thinking too much about it.

In the College, you have one little 'class' which consists of purely interested mage novices, while Hogwarts has entire classes based on age. The College thus rather follows the concept of part-time courses/evening classes, while Hogwarts adopts the structure of regular schools.
It's pure coincidence the three students are two guys and one gal - excluding you.
Tolfdir isn't the archmage (while Dumbledore is the principal), plus Esbern (among others) has the same voice actor. About the personalities of the College members, I honestly can't immediately see what is so very strikingly alike to those of the Hogwarts members (who were with quite a lot, considering everyone from the books used to be a student there aside from the foreigners. Encountering a few with the same certain quirk is probably very likely).
Furthermore, the hallows were simply material things which housed a part of Voldemort's soul. The Eye Of Magnus is one big non-material magic ball which harbors unlimited power.

Well, just my opinion. If you really want to look after possible similarities between the two, don't hold yourself back.

Also, could you PLEASE try to use the "Edit" button on your replies, instead of posting multiple replies after each other? I reminds me of spam, so I'm very inclined to skip your posts.

Your connecting the lines to points which do not connect. Trying to hard. Over thinking it.

The hallows didn't hold his soul. The horcruxes did. The closest thing that TES has to those would be soul gems, but... I don't think they'd work quite the way he'd want them to.

If it was, it would actually be an Unseen University easter egg, which is a lot more likely. The unseen university is far more fun than hogwarts...Hogwarts is just a ripoff (seriously; one of the books in the unseen university line is "Hogfather...")

"The official motto of Unseen University is "Nunc Id Vides, Nunc Ne Vides", loosely translated as "Now you see it, now you don't"."

" ...In fact, the older wizards tend not to understand how magic actually works at all, instead relying on centuries of lore to achieve their effects. Younger wizards enthusiastically experiment, pushing back the boundaries of knowledge and making new discoveries about the nature of the universe. They don't understand how magic works either, but have much more exciting words to explain why not."

Neutronium Dragon: Those are Phylacteries; they contain the soul of a Lich. Its the reason why a lich reforms when you destroy its body: You have to get the phylactery first. You actually deal with this numerous times across the series. The books just didnt call them Phylacteries. But thats what they are, and they are in the game.

Esbern is voiced by Max von Sydow. George Coe voices Tolfdir.

J. K. Rowling is a brilliant author, but she didn't invent the memes she uses. Albus Dumbledore is very like Gandalf, who is very like most people's picture of the Kindly Old Wizard. Likewise Harry, Ron and Hermione are just about any theesome of adventuring kids every written. Enthir is just about any out-for-a-buck grifter (CMOT Dibbler from Terry Pratchett) comes to mind.)

It's not that you use the themes and standard characters, it's how you use them.
