Apparently there are 42 of them you can collect... what do they do?

Could be nothing - it was a bit of a joke in the original two games to collect as many rocks as you could find. Then again, maybe finding all 42 will give some nice congratulatory bonus?

Personally, carrying away a hollowed out rock sounds [censored]. I'm sure its something like the above link: a container with valuable loot.

With hardcoe Mode a big thing now, couldn't they be there for you to create caches hidden across the wasteland of the Mojave? Emergency stashes of food and water you place ahead of time in case you are running low on a return trip? Something to keep your carrying weight down?

Thats a good idea! Considering you can die while fast traveling in hardcoe mode now!

They are for hiding your chems in so the wasteland junkies don't find your stash

There was one right outside megaton that was where you would find my first stealth boy and sniper In a hollowed out rock. they contain goodies

Yeah but they're marked collectible like those Sunset Sarsparilla bottlecaps. Which there had better be a serious reward for discovering.
Maybe they make something. Like a fossil skeleton.

They are probably listed under collectables as you collect the stuff that is in them, so they are probably just rock formations, like the one outside Megaton in FO3.
It sounds a bit pointless to collect rocks...

Thats what I was thinking, reminds me of those death drops by Lachance, places to keep your loot.

Seriously! I like to keep beer and poker chips in mine! I tried to keep milk and egg salad sandwiches in them once, but it didn't turn out so well. That Vegas heat is a killer.

Yeah, if there's stuff IN them (i.e. the rocks are essentially containers that are made to look like rock), then I'm all for it. Also, when you scavenge items from them, if you decide to commit the site to memory, you could, for example, put some of your own materials in it (i.e. an extra gun, ammunition, healing supplies, ect) as a supply cache. Not sure if the items would disappear later, if, for example, you turned off your Xbox or PC, but it might be worth a look.

I definately agree, having "stash points" around the Mojave Wasteland will definately be a great help, especially in hardcoe Mode. Let's hope the items don't dissapear so I can stor a weapon or two, some ammo, food, water, etc so I don't die :vaultboy:
