Home decorating?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 6:45 pm

Can you decorate your house? I mean I would like to clean my mantle over the fireplace off, line up a collection of skulls wearing helmets and what-not. Clear off a table and add some Dwemer artifacts. Etc.

But, I read that your house will eventually reset itself and all your placed items get thrown all over the place when the default items respawn.

Is this true? Is there any way to decorate your house without only using the bookcases and pre-set weapon racks?

Thanks.

I've had some experience with this since it is something I've loved to do since Morrowind and both Fallout games. Some items will end up in the middle of the floor after you've initially placed them (once you reload the cell or exit and enter again), but I've discovered they will eventually stay put if you keep replacing them. So what I do is drop an item on the ground, exit and enter again then place the item. Then leave again and see if it's stayed put. If it hasn't I place it again and repeat the process (usually less than half a dozen times) until finally it stays where I put it.

I haven't yet seen the house reset completely. So once you (eventually) get something in place it should be good.

I lived in Riften and put a mammoth tusk and a troll skull on the chests in the bedroom and neither moved.

this game is a game of no choices.

fun? gone.

it's less than even morrowind. oblivion-like? nope.

disappointing? pluck yes.

I've had a difficult time moving or placing anything in the houses. So now I just stick to bookshelves, mannequins, display cases and weapon racks. You try to drop or move one thing and it flings it across the room.

Also on a previous character, something strange happened to my house in Riften where everything was thrown all over the place, including default objects. It was quite a mess. I blame the housecarl. She was just sitting at the table eating like nothing was wrong.

If you're on PC you can do via console commands. It's pretty easy.

Lets hope they address the issue in a patch because it effects items that you don't place yourself as well. Someone went to all that trouble to set all those tables and whatnot, just to have the food fly off the table onto the floor.

In Morrowind, things stayed where you put them. Partially disabling collisions might be one solution, but I don't know if it's doable, since it can only be disabled for objects that the PC can pick up....

Even if they fix that the grab system is still horrible. I doubt they'll even look into the grab system.

I had my collection of those dragon claw keys on the table but some of them would fall though the table and even the floor when I'd enter the home. I found myself picking up the same claws every time I went into my house.

I do love the bookshelves. So easy to show your literary collections
