1.5 Horrible Flickering Shadows : V

I have tried everything I can think of to fix this problem. I am getting weird flickering shadows with moving stripped lines in many outdoor locations that seems to be affected by the lighting and camera angles. It is particularly noticeable and annoying on snowy landscapes at certain camera angles and distances. I have a good screen shot of the problem but I can't figure out how to attach it. I never saw this problem outdoors before 1.5, although I saw similar issues in some indoor locations with older patches, for example consistently in Breezehome in Whiterun.

This problem is NOT mod related, I get the same problem when I launch the game with zero mods loaded.

This problem is NOT fixed by updating to Nvidia drivers 296.10

This problem is NOT fixed by tweaking or turning off settings like AA and AF, or by turning shadows down to low.

The only setting I've found that makes any diffence is iBlurDeferredShadowMask, increased values help hide the problem a little bit although it hasn't actually fixed it. Basically with higher values it goes from truly hideous moving wavy striped line shadows (e.g. =1 setting) to merely bloody annoying blobby flckering shadows (e.g. =5 setting).

Hope Bethesda or someone else can suggest a solution soon, this is driving me crazy! Thanks for your help.

EDIT: adding fShadowBiasScale=1.0000 to the skyrimprefs.ini made a big difference for me.

A modest effort at searching for previous reports of this issue would have found that updating your Nvidia GPU drivers to the latest version would address this problem.

I've had the same problem with weird shadows and lines after patch 1.5, tried different fixes without success (like you) I just went back to skyrim 1.4 which works satisfactory, I'll just wait and see if bethesda fixes the problem but for now I can live without the new cinematic kill kameras.

That information was not in the OP when I replied. It was added when it was edited approximately 49 minutes after my post. Some users have reported that increasing fShadowBiasScale as high as 4 has effectively caused the issue to disappear. For me, the default for this setting is 0.15, and I don't know the effects of raising this too high.

For me, the default for this setting is 0.15, and I don't know the effects of raising this too high.

Excuse me, but the info about having already tried the new nvidia driver was most certainly in my original post. The post was edited later to add the spoiler tags as another person suggest, and then again later to add in that the fshadowscalebias was helping me with this issue so as to help others having this problem. Regardless of your insinuations, I really have better things to do than edit a post just to embarrass you. I'm sure it's a complete impossibility that you just overlooked that information. Thanks for your input.

fShadowBiasScale=1.0000 worked for me

I'm having the same issue and have for a while now. This certainly made things alot better thanks, but has not stopped the irritating flickering of shadows which seems to be caused by the sun's movement.

I think that might be a separate known issue. If you haven't already, try adding this to skyrim.ini (NOT Skyrimprefs.ini) under the display section.

fSunShadowUpdateTime=0
fSunUpdateThreshold=2.0

Hope that does the trick for you.

I'm not sure if the issue is the same as what I and a few others are experienceing but I think I found the reason of one of the issues that seem to be mostly effecting people who have ATI HD cards. My post is here

If this is the case there isnt a tweak or way to fix it on your own until they correct the shader issue.

Have the same issue as well. I'm not sure what happened with the latest patch but they seem to have made some changes to the way the game renders shadows.

Anyway, if you have land shadows enabled (bDrawLandShadows=1), then revert it back to 0 and that should clear up the majority of the issues. The poor rendering of shadows is still present but it's not nearly as noticable. Also, the fShadowBiasScale=xxxxxx option alters the angle at which shadows are cast realitive to the object, so setting this too high will make shadows appear "cut off" or, for things closer to the ground, not appear to render at all.
