hot keys crash game? : Fallout: New Vegas

when i try to assign a hotkey 1-8 to an item i get an error message fallout new vegas has stopped working any advice
using default key board mapping no console commands used

I'm getting this too starting today after nearly 73 hours of gameplay w/ no issues. I've also replied to a similar thread in the pc hardware issues forum. Not sure where to go - uninstall/reinstall or wait for a modder to patch it.

i have over 100hrs in and very happy with 60000+ credits 4 implants and nice weapons and skills this svcks

Doing some research and will chat up w/ someone else w/ years of bethesda buggathon experience to see if we can figure out a way to fix w/o losing saves or skunking steam.
