House Decorations Won't Stay Put

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:52 am

I am the kind of guy who likes to decorate my house...go figure :)

I like to hoard gems and place them on display, keep statuettes of naked women, and even keep a butterfly in a glass jar around; it makes me happy. However, every time I leave the house and then enter it again, all of my carefully placed decorations are on the floor. What gives?

FYI, the only home I own right now is in Whiterun...Breezehome.

Any fix would be great and until then, I will be a sad thief / decorator.

Cheers!

Just have her follow you to where there aren't any witnesses and kill her?

sneaking up to her with a sword drawn is likely the easiest way. Just dont have her following you, and wait until her back is turned. I have the same problem with Breezehome, its bloody annoying. Cant wait to get the Makarth or Solitude house, maybe they wont be as glitchy? :/

I don't want to kill her. :( Just get her out of my house.

Do the houses in other cities have a mandatory housecarl?

I don't have a problem with putting things in my Breezehome. Everything I have placed has stayed put, maybe their is a limit to how many items are allowed in a space?

As far as Lydia, I just sent her to her room and shut the door.

I tried this and the next time I went into my house, she was once again sitting in my bedroom.

And she left the door open.

God I hate her so much. :(

did you add the v-sync fix? cause that causes stuff to fly around when you open and close doors, even to leave the house.

I don't have a house yet, and when I dismiss her she returns to Dragonsreach. But if you have a house, she goes there instead?

Yeah, I have no problems with any of my decorations either. Except once.

It was kind of super creepy. I put a Statue of Dibella on the end table next to the upstairs bed. I left, adventured and returned. Everything was as I left it, except the statue was laying in the middle of the bed, face up, exactly in the center laying length wise along the bed. A haunting, or an invitation from the goddess herself? Hmm. . . .

As far as Lydia goes, unless you take her out and get her killed, your Whiterun house is stuck with her. The good news is, you can just buy another house in a different city and never go back to Breezehome. I imagine she will just pine away alone, getting fat on the bread she is perpetually eating, and practicing her chair aerobics in your abandoned bedroom. Breezehome is kind of a lame house anyway. I much prefer the stone grandeur of the Markarth house, although it's easier to get to the market and the smith from Breezehome.

I also experience issues with decorations in my house. I had the same thing happen with my statue of Dibella when I tried putting it on a table in my room. Three times I carefully arranged it, and three times it was on the floor when I came back home. (the bed would indeed have been creepier) After the 4th time, she decided to stay. Maybe it was the bowl of pretty deathbells I put next to her statue. My ongoing experience with re-decoration is that almost nothing stays put the first time. Nearly everything I add to the house is on the floor the next time I enter the house. I patiently put it back, and most times it stays after that. Some things take three placements before they stay put. The one exception is the circlets. I have tried putting a circlet of Alchemy on a table in the lab about a zillion times, and it just keeps ending up on the floor. Same thing with ordinary circlets I tried placing on tables in my room, just for their beauty. They simply will not stay where I put them, so I gave up. No clue why this is.

Well as for lydia there's a fun little place called Shriekwind bastion and in said place the have lockable cells. Have her follow you in there then dismiss her run out and close the door. Problem solved :-D

Put the stuff were you want it, save go out the door, in the door, IF the item is on the floor again put it back. be very careful not to "take" the item. save go back out and then in the door, item should be where you put it.

I have a small collection of helmets on the shelves on the left side of the room, 2 I got at once and the other two at seperate times. I've had to pick them all up at least once. but they have stayed their ever since. Adding a Dwemer helmet tomorrow. For now the shelf on the right side after the book case, is going to get skulls. Dynamos will be in any darkish table tops, I think they look cool spinning around.

I put Gems on plates or shallow wood bowls, I seem to have the best luck keeping them in place if I "drop" them in place. Put them very slightly above where you want them and then "drop". It takes a little bit of practice.

BTW The Markarth home does the same thing.http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh611/Trace9569/HPIM1093.jpg You do not want to know how many times I fiddled with that Dibella statue to get it half way around. Plus Argis, your house carl, will give you things back if they "hit the floor"

maybe it's worth it to give it another shot then. i have all the sassy theives guild trinkets - bust of the grey fox, dwemer cube, etc, etc. decided to do a bit of decorating and got it all set (the bust took forever) just the way i wanted it; step out the door for a bit of adventure and upon my return - just a train wreck. falmer eyes and maps, dwemer cubes et al just strewn haphazardly about the room. might try placing a simple object first and see what happens..

I try to not do more than 4 items at once, mostly cause I really don't want to have to pick them all up and put them back. Just don't put things to close together. I only had my "red apples in a bowl" jump out once., Good Luck.

Item scattering happens in all your homes and is very annoying. It's better if you just drop the item and leave it where it lays rather than picking it up and moving it place. This is annoying when it comes to putting things on shelves though so its better to use items that are large rather than filling it with lots of small items. Good way to find out if it will scatter or not is to leave your home and re-enter again afterwards. Takes a few tweaks but you can eventually get your home looking different although never exactly how you wanted it.
