You may have to do some other quests first to get a name for yourself. I remember having to do some stuff against the Silver-Bloods before Markarth 'normalizes'. :P

Remember the days when you could just off someone and take over the house? Like in that quest in Morrowind to persuade that Dunmer that typically failed and you had to beat him up but he never gave up and always came to and came at you with a weapon afterward? So the only way was to off him?

I just bought the house in Markarth.

I had no speech options until I completed 5 favors and jobs for the jarl.

i've bought it several times so far, you don't have to do lots of quests, there is a random factor that triggers the proper dialogue but you can make sure it happens, do the first two quests the jarl sends yo on, needs to be level 20 and the second quest is to get the shield, if he doesn't offer you the house after bringing him the sheild, you prob only need to do a small favor for someone in the town, there's lots of various quests for people in the town, killing a dragon, delivering the ring to calicimo etc, so 2 quests directly for the jarl then an favor for someone else, but i nkow you don't need to do all the quests there, i have got the house several times after just those two quests for the jarl, that should do and its worked for me every time, but you need to bring him the shield or you won't be able to buy the house.

Pepperidge farm remembers.

So does Little Debbie. In fact, couldn't help remembering since I'm playing Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion as well as Skyrim....

If you help miners near Markath with their problems with Forsworn you can get two things: right to buy a house in Markath and right to access in Orcish Strongholds.
