How about doing PC Ports properly?

Post » Fri Apr 22, 2011 7:20 pm

While Im really enjoying this game, aside from the bugs, I cant help but wonder why after all the complaints over the years from Oblivion to Fallout 3, it still feels Consolized. The UI is so huge, its clucky on High Resolution PC Monitors, if modders can make the UI scale to the PC resolution in both Oblivion and Fallout 3, is it really so hard for Bethesda to make their games' UI scale properly on the PC versions right out of the box? The huge Console sizes are headache inspiring, its a good thing the game is so good though or I'd have to wait to Darn UI got updated for NV.

How about just doing it like they used to? Make it for the PC then port it to the console.

I wish, but they care more about consoles then PCs.

Well they do make more from the console then the PC after all... which pains me to say as a hard core PC gamer.

But the reason you see games developed for the console (generally the 360) and then ported to other platforms is because, as I understand it, its easier to go from 360 to the PC then PC to 360. Its really not going to matter what system the developers like better... they are going to develop it for the system that provides the smoothest pipeline for porting.

No no you guys have it all wrong, see these developers just have awful vision and even on the pc they need the GIANT text.

No, but bad jokes aside, just wait for DarN to come along. He seems to make a decent UI for everything Beth (or Obsidian) gets wrong.

Yeah, the fact I have to scroll down to see all four sentence options in a conversation when I'm viewing the text on a 22-inch 1680x1050 resolution monitor from a foot away is criminal.

Have any of you looked at just how little Darn actually has to do, file wise, to make his interface mods? Why can't Bethesda do that? Other games have UI's that scale according to resolution. Hell, my friend, who had never coded before, made a interface and HUD that scaled to screen resolution AND aspect ratio in Unreal, in less than two weeks. And professional programmers can't manage this? I think we all know that they can, they just can't be bothered.

Yeah it is weird that they didn't give an option to make the UI mor like Darn's. Heck, they slap FWE onto and called it "hardcoe mode" why not a UI mod?

Indeed, I guess they just don't care about the PC fanbase enough to bother giving them an interface suited to PCs, they probably just figure that PC players will make a mod for it anyway, so until that happens, we'll just have to live with the default interface.

yeah, the UI was designed for people who plug their consoles into old (non-flatscreen) TVs. Apparently it is too much hassle (according to an internview I read) to then have a scalable PC/or hi-def TV option. Needs more under-the-hood shinanagans than simply changing the font size.

Don't worry, I'm sure by the time FO4 comes out it will have a modern, scalable, resolution-detecting UI.

Yes please. The text is WAY too big and annoying! Maybe they had a contest at the dev office to see who could make the text size the largest before someone from QA complained about it.

If New Vegas has ini file like in Fallout 3 look in fonts and look for these

sFontFile_1=Textures\Fonts\DarN_FranKleinBold_14.fnt
sFontFile_2=Textures\Fonts\DarN_FranKleinBold_16.fnt
sFontFile_3=Textures\Fonts\Glow_Monofonto_Medium.fnt
sFontFile_4=Textures\Fonts\DarN_Sui_Generis_Otl_10.fnt
sFontFile_5=Textures\Fonts\Fixedsys_Comp_uniform_width.fnt
sFontFile_6=Textures\Fonts\DarN_Sui_Generis_Otl_13.fnt
sFontFile_7=Textures\Fonts\DarN_Klill_Outline_20.fnt
sFontFile_8=Textures\Fonts\Glow_Futura_Caps_Large.fnt

Try it in your own risk please.

They are just scared of pirating like all the other developers... but if they made things worth buying at release then good people would still pay for the game, even if they pirate trial it.

Which can be further reduced by releasing a demo near the release date. Of course, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to make a demo of these kinds of open world RPGs :shrug:

Anyway, SAVE US, DARN! :bowdown:
