How to activate cheat codes : Fallout: New Vegas

Hey all. I play new vegas from Steam app/software. I cannot use any cheat codes, and I don't know how to activate cheat codes!
Can someone help?

Usually it's with the tilde ( ~ ) key.

It's only the tilde ~ key on US configured keyboards, but wherever you are (hmmm let me take a guess on that based on your username!) it is the key immediately to the left of the 1 key and above the TAB key. In the UK this is the ` key (the ~ key for us is way over the other side of the keyboard and does not open the console)

Edit to add: if that doesn't work, try opening the .ini file and finding the line that activates the console, bAllowConsole, if that line has a value of =0, change it to =1 and save the file. MAKE A BACKUP COPY of the original ini file first though just in case it messes anything up and you have to restore the original unamended file.
