How are food stats calculated?

I'm fiddling about stats of alcohol but when I tell an alcohol item to raise a SPECIAL point by 4 (for example), in game it will raise it by 7. I haven't been able to find anywhere that explains how it's calculated in game.

I can tell the GECK to not consider alcohol a food item. It may fix this problem but I'm not sure if it will cause any problems with something else. It's a last resort just now.

I think it takes the base number (4) and does something too it based on your Survival skill. It may do + 10%? Is your suvival skill around 30?

It's 40 which means it would be 7.5%

I think I'll just make them not food items and see if it screws anything else up
