How can we install Skyrim to a custom drivefolder?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:28 am

I'm sure this has already been asked numerous times, but two searches in hasn't found it so far. I finally broke down and bought Skyrim yesterday only to find that Bethesda has now jumped on the DRM/Steam wagon. It svcks, but I realize that whining about that won't do any good. That being said, how can I now install Skyrim to my RPG drive with 70Gb free instead of my C drive (which is nearly out of space)?

If there is a legal/official way to avoid Steam altogether, I'm all ears for that too. If not, let's just stick to moving where the 6Gb of files go.

Easy, move Steam there: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129
The more complicated route is via symlinks.

No, there isn't.

Thanks deaths_soul - I'll look into symlinks. Steam would piss off a lot less people if it gave you the typical "Choose Destination Folder" selection during an install.

It does. I installed it to my D drive without moving it. Are you installing Steam via the disc or the downloaded installer?

via disc I'm assuming - it only took about 20 minutes to install, whereas downloading the 6Gb on my connection would've taken a looooooot longer. It never gave me the option to choose a location, just installed to the default Steam directory without asking. I was able to use a 3rd party Steam tool to move it after the fact, but was hesitant to since a lot of the posters on that forum seemed to have issues with the game after moving it. So far it seems to be working, but I'm only as far as Riverwood.

I meant Steam, not Skyrim. And you can move Steam using the link I posted above. I think we're each not understanding the other here. >_>

It all is Steam. I mean, Steam owes you and Skyrim ;)
Nah, if you install Steam, you get a choice to where you want to install so for example on you D-drive. And then every game terrorized by Steam is installed in that same folder.
Or like Deaths Soul said: just move your *whole* Steam folder from your C-disk to where ever you want.

In many ways, Steam 'feels' a lot like an 'Apple' product. It makes things convenient but largely needs to do things its own way and doesn't like users fiddling around trying to make it work outside its specified 'norm.'

Eventhough you can install Steam to a location different from its default location, you still must install steam games within a sub-folder of the main Steam folder. I don't like organizing my games in this manner, but there you have it.

I recently bought KoA: Reckoning and that game requires Origin which is more or less equivelent to Steam. But I noticed that Origin still let's me install games wherever I want, which I appreciate. And makes me curious as to why Steam doesn't.

Yes, use this. I have Steam on my F drive and used Steammover to move Skyrim to my C drive, because it's a ssd. If you want to move your whole steam folder to another drive, which is what I did originally because of space limitations, you can make a new folder, I just called it Program Files (x86) on my F drive like the original on the C drive and copied the steam folder to that. You will get a notification from steam, just follow the instructions for a new password and you are set. Windows will still put the folder for saves and ini's in the my games folder in documents on the C drive whether you move everything or just Skyrim, so be aware.
