Somehow I became unwanted in Whiterun. I probably killed someone that I should not have. I am not clear on what crime I committed to be attacked and killed when I go into town. Is there any way to clear my name? Some sort of quest? I have paid fines in the past but this time they don't even want to talk.

Only thing you can do is leave town for a while, problably 2-3 days of game time. Then come back and they should be willing to arrest you.

IRC in previous TES games characters would calm down after 3 in-game days. Try visiting the town after that time. If you have a bounty, they'll still try to arrest you though.
Also, have you tried lowering your weapon, that will make many npc-s stop attacking you.

I tried lowering my weapons, I also tried attacking with no weapons then lowering my weapons. Now everybody in town is attacking me..even the old ladies...kind of funny. I have no murders but have 5 assaults, 7 trespasses, 40 locks picked, I tried waiting for 3 game days before going to town - did not work. I tried going to town and then leaving for 3 games days...did not work. I am just about ready to roll back the character or play evil.

OK, I think i figured it out...I am now a vampire...how the heck did I become a vampire? geez.

Fighting another vampire can give you the disease.

ok, how do i get rid of the disease?

A piece of advice: Don't trust bounty hunters.

I am still outlawed in Markarth due to bug there and paid he bounty twice.

I ended up rolling back my character...
