How does Muffle spell work?

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 12:34 am

I'm wondering how exactly the Muffle spell works? Does it give a big bonus to Sneaking and Pickpocketing? Anyone know what the amount of percentage it is? Or is it like the Invisibility spell where it cancels once you do something?

I'm debating if I should cast it on a pair of boots for Lydia so she won't give me away everytime I go into Sneak mode and try to backstab someone!

thanks

There are several things that factor into Sneaking. One is the sound of your armor giving you away, Muffle makes your armor silent.

However, they can still see you, so they can see Lydia as the companions do not use Cover.

Bottom line, if you want to sneak, tell your companion to wait somewhere else until you are done.

Are you sure? Whenever I sneaked I saw Lydia crouch down too so I assumed she was sneaking.

It add's a 20% bonus (if i remember correctly) to whatever you current sneak bonus/equipment etc is so for example you would get a better sneaking bonus in light armour over heavy armour.

i've done alot of stealthing and never had a problem with a companion , they always seem to stealth with you.

muffle does what it says on the tin , i seem to be eble to get closer without being spotted.

I doubt she's very good at it. Lydia strikes me as the kind of girl who prefers the direct approach. However Brelyna of the College of Winterhold seems quite accomplished when it comes to sneaking.

Yea Lydia would be better at sneaking if she could just shut up.

I was doing a certain quest involving a museum. Avoiding spoilers...

My follower was crouched out in the hallway like a doofus as normal. I was crouched around the corner with my muffled boots on. I moved around at full crouch speed and the guard standing right on my follower had no problem with either of us. He never detected my muffled movement nor had any issue at all with my follower standing in front of him.

There is still a good reason to leave followers behind though. They love to go pummel stuff at inopportune moments.

Sneaking does not mean being unseen, it means you are less likely to be seen.

Just because she is crouched, does not mean she crouches in a place where she can't be seen.

While wearing an item with muffle I've noticed I can move around out of sight of enemies without being detected. If I take the item off I can't take one step without them detecting me even though they can't see me. Basically my experience has told me that it reduces or eliminates the noise you make while moving.
