How easy is it for a newcomer to create mods?

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:58 pm

I have never made a mod in my life, and have no experience coding. I am however a quick learner and know my way around a computer. Ive always been interested in making mods, specificly for the elder scrolls and I'm wandering if I can simply pick up the creation kit and get started or do I need time to study the system, and learn a coding language?

I, like you, was completely new to Creation Kit. I've never used any of the Elder Scroll mod tools, and I can tell you it's not that hard really. Just watch a few videos that Bethesda did and start experimenting yourself, it took me only a few days to make my first mod and add a bunch of features to it.

It really depends, you won't need scripting for new houses or simple quests.

But modding is a timesink, yes, and it doesn't matter how experienced you are.

Scripting is really simple. Took me about 1 day of pure reading to grasp the advanced concept of it

You can make a mod within the first few hours.

Making a good mod however takes a while. Making a truly outstanding mods takes more time, effort and patience than you can imagine.

Creating a new simple mod is very easy.

Creating a good mod is not easy and takes a little time but its worth it.

Creating a awesome mod will take up alot of the day and require that your experienced and with patience.

Creating a legendary mod, the kind that everyone uses and ends up being one of those mods you cant go without takes not only a buttload of time and effort but also a small team of good modders.

Thats my 2 cents.

That's much like asking, how hard is it to build something? Okay, well are you building a chair or a space shuttle? A lot of the CK is very simple, some parts are a little harder, but if you spend the time to learn it you can do anything without a huge amount of distress. (Except for making your own worldspace... that's a mess)

Well, this is what I can tell you:

I've never used the Creation Kit ever before. Even though I've had some experience with the Warcraft 3 Editor this didn't really helped me at all - but after following the Tutorials created by Bethesda I easily managed to work with the CK - and it's not that hard at all. Sure, some points may be confusing at the first time, but you shouldn't let yourself get discouraged over it. Just take your time and start small - improve from that point. Had to learn that myself, but once I got the idea it worked out. Yet I haven't released anything, but I still want to learn and improve before releasing stuff nobody wants to see ever.

Well that's not a problem for some people who never had one to begin with..
