How do i fix skyrim wrongly detect graphic card and setting?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 4:54 am

Hello,

Could someone offer me an solution? Ever since patch 1.5.26 released. As usual i delete both ini and rendererinfo.txt in my games\skyrim folder where the saves are. After this, it start to detect as 6800 series and high settings. I also get unpredictable freeze some exterior. Can be after playing for less than an hour or a few hours...

All were fine before this patch. Had try reverting to 12.1 or 12.3 after clean drivers install to no avail.

Used to detect my hd6950 as 6900 series and ultra.

Really doesnt want to uninstall skyrim and reinstall as the downloads would mean leaving pc on for over 7 hours on a good speed day.

Thanks, i will give you gift of charity should you donate working solution here.

Have you install some kind of HDR mod or better perfomance mod for Skyrim lately? See if you have this file:

d3d9.dll

in Steam/.../Skyrim folder

If you have, delete it and return to do the same process you describe (delete .ini, etc....)

The freezes may not have to do with the fact that Skyrim wrongly detect your graphics card, just said. Is likely, but not 100% sure. Also, Are you certain that in the time you revert to 12.1 you make a CLEAN install (delete the old ones, run ccleaner or similar, reboot, install new ones...) Are you sure? Sorry, I have to ask :)

Anyway... Even if you delete the d3d9.dll file, perhaps your Skyrim folder in your user name/docs (The folder with the saves folder and the .ini files) may be on "read only" and Skyrimprefs don't chance and the launcher don't make a new one... ? ...

BTW, open Skyrimprefs.ini and under

[Display]

there is a line

sD3DDevice=

What's next in there?

"ATI Radeon HD 6800 Series" or ATI Radeon HD 6900 Series" ?

Yes clean uninstall by clicking amd cataylst manager and select express uninstall, reboot, remove all ati amd folders in hdd, go into device manager, uninstall 6950 adaptor, check if any ati process running in task menu... Then run driver sweeper... Reboot... Defrag hdd, reboot install new driver.

No skyrimpref.ini is still 6800 series.

Device manager detect 6950.

Ok, the GPU drivers have been properly installed, no doubt about that :)

But what about the... user name>my docs>my games>Skyrim? < This folder (underline), under properties, is read only? If yes, chance that, please.

I don't know, probably is only a minor error introduced by the last patch, I made a quick google search, I saw no know solution, beyond the fact to delete d3d9.dll if you have it.

I dare to say to forget about the stupid launcher and her strange behavior missing your GPU, and HOPEFULLY with no effect on gameplay... However, you have freezes, and is impossible to know if they result from the wrongly detection of the GPU or not. Like I said before, is likely, but ... :(

If I was you, I would still do these steps, by order:

1. DirectX reinstall (yep, even if your PC correctly detects the GPU, is possible that you may have a missing .dll that is preventing Skyrim launcher -or other game launcher- to detect your GPU correctly)

2. BACKUP ALL my savegames > Delete all the folder I mentioned earlier > Verify Game Cache Integrity (Steam) again

3. Make sure CCC don't "force" their own settings, but instead that, make sure that the game can freely make their own (Sorry for the English, is not my native language, not even the second, but I think you will understand this step, hopefully...)

4. Forget about the sugestion from Skyrim Launcher, choose the default valours in Skyrim settings that you know your GPU can handle, and THEN play the freaking game and pray for no more freezes. :D

Sorry for not being better help. Best of luck. Cheers.
