So how do we fix this microstutter thing?

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 10:45 am

I seem to get this issue occaisionally. I don't know why, but going to windowed mode fixes it.

It stutters around light sources the most, but not in windowed.

But I would like to know the best way to fix this without window mode, because I can't stand seeing a border on the game screen.

Why would this happen only a few times throughout my playthroughs? Sometimes it would be horrible, other times non-existant?

Help D):

It's simple. Playing Skyrim in fullscreen will result in microstutters. If you play it in windowed mode it'll run smooth as a babys butt. Oblivion, FO3 & NV had this bug as well and it's absolutely mind baffling that Bethesda just ignores the issue. It's time for a new engine and not just a rebrand of Gamebryo ......... /facepalm X20

When I put the game on Utra at 1024X1280 it still stutters on light sources in windowed. But if I turn AA off, it works ok, is this a different issue to the 64hz bug?

I would assume this is what I have been experienceing lately.

My stats are in Sig, but to put it short, Phenom II 965 @ 4.0gHz, GTX 580 1.5gb 800/1600, 8g Ram, Win7 64b.

I run the game at 1920x1080, FXAA-Off, AA-Off, AF-Nvidia Forced 16x/off Ultra preset, shadows turned down to High, HDTextureDLCs.

Game runs at 60 FPS (Games Default VSync) outdoors and indoors, but it doesnt feel smooth sometimes, when i notice this, there is a slight fluctuation between 59&60 (measured with DXtory) usually when looking at objects in candlelight or at tables with objects and candles. Also corners with shadows. Perhaps its just more visible when looking at walls or stationary objects.

It's barely perceptible, but it seems like the game is stuttering alot more then 1 frame, but the fps doesnt drop lower.

Either way its there and it just kills me. I'm glad they have optimized what they have, its come a LOOONG way since release. I used to have to play with a FPS cap of 31 so i didnt notice the variations

If this is the same problem as mentioned above, i will try the fix. If it indeed works, my problems will be solved and i wont be in the forums much haha.

im pretty sure all windowed mode does is disable vsync, so why not just disable vsync instead, this game has issues with vsync and i wish it worked for me but it doesnt, i know im getting the 64hz bug cuz as ive said a million time, when i put the command ifpsclamp=60 it rids the skipping completly but is then unplayable still cuz it goes slow mo, wen drops under 60

Im just glad that bethesda atleast made a great story and gameplay that some REAL programmers outside of Bethesda wants to make these fixes for us.

Check this post here. It completely fixes the microstutter problem with fullscreen mode.

It does work well in windowed mode, but how do you make windowed mode bigger? Right now it's about 4x6 inches.

Thanks

Change the resolution in the launcher back to your native reso....windows mode sets it small.

Disabling v-sync creates screen tearing. Borderless window mode does not create screen tearing.

Windowed mode does not disable v-sync. However, it does smooth out the microstutter bug. The biggest draw back of running in windowed mode is the fact Skyrim receives less resource attention from your computer as it's being treated as just another window instead of a fullscreen application. The best solution floating around seems to be the use of a framerate limiter to cap the game fps to 60fps (this is different than simply using vertical sync even though both have the same goal). This has the same smoothing effect as the borderless window mode while still giving the game your computer's full resource attention. For more details check the post here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1363249-frame-rate-limiter-microstutter-fix/

I tried this and it actually made the game stuttering worse.

What happens if you run simple borderless window executable via gamebooster 3.3.1. which has that "run game in game desktop" mode for allocating max resources to the game?

Just tested out SBW in my native resolution and all of my indoor stutter is completely gone. I can now run 8x SSAA and Shadows on Ultra with better performance than the prior 4x SSAA and Shadows on High :D

SWB lowered my FPS, which didn't solve the problem of stuttering when i've got FPS dips instead!!!!!

Using DXtory, i limit TESV to 60FPS, i also use Skyrim CPU booster (i don't remember the exact name, its a CMD window, using the windowsmediaplayer workaround, that runs behind and boosts the CPU Timer Frequency and takes some of the bottleneck off the CPU.) It sounds complicated but its not, works wonders.

No indoor or outdoor stutters, solid 60 FPS besides HDD loads which may make it drop to 58-59 for a split second :) I couldn't be happier.

If I limit my FPS to anything like 60 or 59 for example, my grids and LOD don't load right, they don't change from distant graphics til I'm right in the middle lol. How do people not have this problem?? :P

I'll try limiting with Nvidia inspector this week, see if that works for me.
