How to get income as a Thief?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:01 pm

Now, before you 14 year old break your zipper from the thought of being a smart ass, I know the the general answer. Steal no doubt. But what ? Lately I have been just raiding towns. Raiding as in..Enter, wait till night, loot all the stores, sell it to people who will buy stolen goods.

What I really want to know is? What do you guys do?

You'll probably have better luck pickpocketing. Most NPC's seem to have some jewellery on them.

My biggest mistake is believing that all good treasure and items are in chests and such. While I'm in Winterhold, I go to the long house, while the Jarl is sleeping, I find a chest with coin in it, but that was a disappointment. But out of the corner of my eye. Boom laying on a shelf almost blending in..Staff of Whatever valuing at 2000.

Having to save and reload based on a random chance is quite tedious though.

Yeah, too bad you can only sell it for 300 gold though.

this definitely. Pickpocketing can net far more cash than stealing from houses and shops.

As far as break ins though, alchemy shops seem to be a pretty decent mark.

Best though is the payouts for doing the TG radiant quests.

Pickpocketing is by far the best way to earn money in this game. Once you can take armor and weapons you can net tens of thousands from the city's you visit.

Ya alchemy shops are great. As I don't steal from them to make cash, I steal from them for my own protection.

You are not playing a thief. What you are playing is a burglar! As a thief do you only steal when you see an opportunity. A burglar plans his thefts and cleans out houses.

The best you can then find in Skyrim are the quarters of the Jarls, the shops and perhaps a few enchanted weapons in display cases here and there. But mostly will you only find food, plates, bowls, tankards and buckets, really.

I suggest to play the game as someone other than a thief and hide your thieving nature. I know I have one, and I do steal stuff and pick pocket people a lot, but I never plan for it. It just happens! I do not even know how...

Edit:
If you only want to get rich then choose Alchemy. You can brew hundreds of potions all with a value well above 500 septims and will have a problem finding enough shops with cash to pay you.

You make so much money with pickpocketing, just deal with the bounty. People want to kill you? Take out your weapon then put it back again to "surrender" then go pay the fine, or do not :D Though once you got caught around, you'll have to switch places, maybe even town. It's damn more funny when you don't reload and keep the fines though :) You become famous, all guards are like "Wait, I know you!" /me runs away quickly. No more arrow on the knee chat.

^^

Also level up Speech.... you'll get more $$ the more you trade, and eventually can sell stolen goods to anyone.

Also you can do the Dark Brotherhood questline... there is some unique clothing that gives +20% barter prices. There is also a helmet from a daedric quest that improves speech and prices, and amulet of zenither that gives +10% (stole mine somewhere :P)

As noted alchemy stores are great targets... some of the houses in the rich neighborhoods as well have decent loot to sell.

Join the thieves guild. They have an endless series of random jobs giving 300-500 for each job. And the jobs are quick. Go to a specific house and find 3 specific brightly colored objects sitting on the shelves withou being seen, or go to a specific house and plant an item you are given in a specific chest. With quick travel you could do a job every 10 minutes all day.

There is no penalty for looking at what someone has. You can look at NPC's inventory all day long, not having to save, and not worrying about getting busted. If they have something worth stealing then you can exit out, save, pickpocket (reload if you get caught). I stopped stealing anything worth less than 300 septims. But you'll often find staffs and a few weapons that are worth a whole bunch. And you can find necklaces and helmets that will help with what merchants offer you. And you can enchant items to help with getting better prices. and you can use perks to get better prices and be able to sell more of your stash.

Joining the thieves guild and completing the quests certainly is a great way to increase your fortune. After a while you will find that your fences will have much more gold for purchasing your stolen wares.

One also gets to see the chance for pick-pocketing an item. Took me a while before I noticed it. Just enter the pick-pocket dialogue when you are hidden and move the mouse over the item's name on the list. You see a percentage displayed for how high your chance of success is (below the item's stats).
