How hard is hardcoe mode?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:45 pm

Hi,

I'm from Australia and we don't get the game for another 2 days, but I think I want to play on hardcoe mode.

1. Do you die a lot on hardcoe mode?
2. Are you limited in how far you can travel through the wasteland on hardcoe mode - distance or time ?
3. How often do you have eat and drink?
4. Can you fast travel? Does this have any limitations in hardcoe mode?
5. Does radiation affect you more so in hardcoe mode?
6. Do caps weigh anything?
7. How often do you have to sleep?
8. Can save games when you are tired, hungry or thirsty in the middle of no where ruin your progress? i.e. would you need to revert to an earlier save game?
9. Can you fast travel with broken limbs?
10. How much for example does 1 9mm and 1 5.56mm round weigh ?
11. Do you have to manage you companions health also?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can switch hardcoe mode on and off just like you can change the difficulty any time you want. So you aren't stuck with hardcoe mode if you decide it svcks. You can fast travel, but if your character would die during the trip from hunger or thirst it won't let you do it.

1. Do you die a lot on hardcoe mode?
a bit more - but mainly i find myself running like hell to try to escape when I get slammed by too many enemies. the cowboy repeater is a lifesaver

overall it seems a lot more balanced on hardcoe mode. in FO3 you can stockpile stimpaks and the game becomes way too easy, even on the hardest setting

with hardcoe mode, it's a lot more fun because you actually have a reason to eat and drink stuff and sleep. I highly recommend it

2. Are you limited in how far you can travel through the wasteland on hardcoe mode - distance or time ?
nope, not really, there are enough locations in between as far as I can tell where you can find water and food etc. almost everywhere

3. How often do you have eat and drink?
not too often, i was overdoing it at first - some drinks like sodas actually make you more thirsty so you have to check to make sure it says H20 -x points and not +x points

4. Can you fast travel? Does this have any limitations in hardcoe mode?
yes, but i'm trying to go through without fast traveling. it's more immersive and it makes the game really easy if you can just teleport to somewhere where there is a doctor if you need a limb healed, for example, or teleport to goodsprings for water.

5. Does radiation affect you more so in hardcoe mode?
i've only been up to minor radiation poisoning so far and it is only -1 END, so not too bad

6. Do caps weigh anything?
nope

7. How often do you have to sleep?
not often, some times when I sleep my HP heals, but most of the time it doesn't, I don't fully understand the mechanics of it yet

8. Can save games when you are tired, hungry or thirsty in the middle of no where ruin your progress? i.e. would you need to revert to an earlier save game?
no, there are actually lots of sources of water, food, etc., hardcoe mode just makes it so that you are actually happy when you find some mac and cheese or whatever

9. Can you fast travel with broken limbs?
yes, but i'm trying not to. I got crippled by some powder gang dudes with dynamite and I had to hobble around, trying to run away from them to find a doctor to fix my leg

10. How much for example does 1 9mm and 1 5.56mm round weigh ?
very little, i haven't had any weight problems at all so far and i have lots of bullets
ammo weighs like 0.04 or 0.01 etc. depending on the type of ammo. i do have light armor though and 8 strength which helps

11. Do you have to manage you companions health also?
i haven't gotten any companions yet

If you decide to switch off the hardcoe mode then you lose the achievement or trophy. It really is allot of fun, in a sense it gives allot of realism for the kind of game it is...

Timed healing is the only thing that makes hardcoe hard imo. Its a good thing to. You really have to pick and choose your battles. Planning ahead is important.

Like the poster above, you can go overboard with finding food and h20. You don't have to worry about h2o and food debuff as much. Just make sure u have some on you just incase.

This wasn't my question, but i had a lot of the same sorts of concerns with hardcoe mode. So, I just wanted to some degree formally thank you for actually answering each aspect with a fairly thoughtful response - a lot of posters do not take the time to do such a thing, so thank you.

hardcoe Mode is not as bad as people make it out to be. Play with your brain more than your thumbs and you'll have a relatively easy go of it. Also, ammunition doesn't way that much, but if you find yourself over-encumbered, you can break them down to their base components at a reload bench, and those have no weight.

1. Do you die a lot on hardcoe mode? I don't. Not eating, drinking, or sleeping is kind of like rads in FO3

2. Are you limited in how far you can travel through the wasteland on hardcoe mode - distance or time ? No, but you must eat, drink water, and sleep.

3. How often do you have eat and drink? Depends on your survival skill. Either way it's easy to manage.

4. Can you fast travel? Does this have any limitations in hardcoe mode? You can't fast travel if you'd die from starvation, sleep depevation, or of thirst.

5. Does radiation affect you more so in hardcoe mode? No difference as far as I can tell.

6. Do caps weigh anything? No

7. How often do you have to sleep? Same as #3

8. Can save games when you are tired, hungry or thirsty in the middle of no where ruin your progress? i.e. would you need to revert to an earlier save game? Yes, if your out in the middle of nowhere and you save game without the proper resources you could potentially die before aquiring them thus having to reload an older save.

9. Can you fast travel with broken limbs? Yes

10. How much for example does 1 9mm and 1 5.56mm round weigh ? Very little. Not worth worrying about.

11. Do you have to manage you companions health also? n/a as I haven't aquired a companion.

hardcoe isn't actually very hardcoe. Food, water and sleep aren't something you need on a daily basis, they're more like something you need on a weekly basis. Both food and water move so slowly that they're at < 50 (out of 1000) 99% of the time purely from eating and drinking things to get rid of their weight. Sleep is even slower and hitting a bed every few days is plenty. The only real difficulty or challenge comes from Very Hard. Running into a Giant Radscorpion early on when it has enough armor to laugh at everything you have

1. Do you die a lot on hardcoe mode?

No.

2. Are you limited in how far you can travel through the wasteland on hardcoe mode - distance or time ?

Not really.

3. How often do you have eat and drink?

Occasionally.

4. Can you fast travel? Does this have any limitations in hardcoe mode?

You have to be able to get there without dying, which doesn't mean much because I can't imagine why you'd ever be very hungry, thirsty or tired.

5. Does radiation affect you more so in hardcoe mode?

I haven't noticed anything special.

6. Do caps weigh anything?

No.

7. How often do you have to sleep?

Rarely.

8. Can save games when you are tired, hungry or thirsty in the middle of no where ruin your progress? i.e. would you need to revert to an earlier save game?

You would have to try to put yoruself in that bad of a situation, if it's even possible.

9. Can you fast travel with broken limbs?

I don't know, I never break them.

10. How much for example does 1 9mm and 1 5.56mm round weigh ?

0.03. Unless you're carrying hundreds of rounds of various types it's not really an issue.

I haven't used companions.

If anything...the toughest part is water. Its not that hard to over do it, and it seems you need two bottles of water each day or so or you get dehydrated.

Any drink that is not water, makes you thristy. There are a few food choices that add food and water, so they are...interesting.
I disagreed heavily at first, but it does give the feel of being in a desert. Alcohol dries you out. Can't live on wine and coca cola. This is not just a wasteland...this is a desert wasteland. Big difference when you think about it.

You can go a day without sleeping.

The penalty for starving is heavy for those of us who are pack rats.

I've enjoyed hardcoe mode so far. You really have to think before you do things even more. I took on the fight in Primm. Battled my way into the place and about to storm the second floor when I checked my vitals. I was about to get dehydrated and starved! Took care of business right quick, and waited for the food to digest (i.e. healing). A fire fight breaks out between the NPC and the bad guys. I launch into the fight. Its weird getting hit, yet seeing your hit points still climb now and then from the food and drink!

hardcoe is the way many of us played Fallout 3...its just codified now.

hardcoe becomes LETHAL, imo, when you damage a limb or three. A fight can turn dire right then and there...and any fight after that is now perilous. Cripple a leg and having to limp your way to a doctor through the desert is impossible. You break out the doctors bag on those and get some limb restoration.

They SHOULD have killed fast travel with a crippled leg, imo.

Even when fully healed, you go see the doctor to heal up those limbs for as cheaply as possible. I use the doctor bags in emergencies. Docs take care of the after emergency cleanup.

I'm seeing a lot of personal opinion with these questions, and not a lot of answering.

"oh it's so easy" "Oh they should have disabled fast travel when X"

The Op wasn't asking what you think would make hardcoe more hardcoe, he was asking How often do these things happen.

yes, I realize some of you answered, but most of you haven't.

Almost every question he asked has been answered multiple times...and I enjoy reading people's opinions. That's what forums are for.

If your on the fence about hardcoe mode I would say this: just do it. Once you start playing you'll be glad you did. And if you aren't, and it becomes annoying, just switch it off. I'm not far in but I can see it adding fun little elements to the gameplay. It's fun.

Playing Very Hard hardcoe.

1. Do you die a lot on hardcoe mode?
Nope. Combat difficulty is about the same. It only gets harder in fights against super mutants or if go you towards the area north of the starting city too early. You can easily stack up HP restoring items to counter the lack fo instant healing. I could see melee/unarmed being much harder, though.
2. Are you limited in how far you can travel through the wasteland on hardcoe mode - distance or time ?
No. The dehydration, hunger and tiredness barely change when traveling. It takes several in-game days to die by hunger, and I believe 3 days for thrist. Tiredness seems even longer. Traveling from one side to the other of the wasteland has very little impact on this.
3. How often do you have eat and drink?
Not very often. See above. There's also greatly improved food can reduce hunger by up to 400 points - with the maximum being 1000. Water is -100, and the Dirty variant is plentiful (you can purify it with Survival).
4. Can you fast travel? Does this have any limitations in hardcoe mode?
Yes. No.
5. Does radiation affect you more so in hardcoe mode?
It doesn't.
6. Do caps weigh anything?
They don't.
7. How often do you have to sleep?
I've only slept when I wanted to pass the time. Takes ages for the tiredness meter to go up, and there's consumables that reduce it (Nuka-Cola, Tabacco/Coffee derivates for the most part).
8. Can save games when you are tired, hungry or thirsty in the middle of no where ruin your progress? i.e. would you need to revert to an earlier save game?
Very unlikely. You start getting stat drops and indicators as your meters go badly, so unless you neglect your character for several days, this will never occur.
9. Can you fast travel with broken limbs?
Never tried to fast travel with two broken legs, but it worked with one. There's a perk to let you fast travel while over-encumbered, but none for when your legs are broken. I assume they didn't code that limitation in.
10. How much for example does 1 9mm and 1 5.56mm round weigh ?
1 9mm is 0.03, 5.56mm is either 0.03 or 0.05. Bigger rounds weight more obviously. But it's more of a factor for energy weapons where the smallest stuff is 0.08, and they all tend to be faster firing guns (except for plasma). Ammo weight isn't really a big deal if you have some repair skill, as you can break down bullets into weightless components then rebuild them when you need. Although if you go around collecting ammo, instead of just keeping what you need, it can get rough, but the pack rat perk is simply amazing for that.
11. Do you have to manage you companions health also?
You don't. That would get annoying very quickly.
