How to improve FPS in the cities

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 12:57 am

My game runs on auto deteced high and keeps a stable 60 FPS but in the cities its droping to 45-50 and worse looke up to the castles/high buildings. How can I improve my performance?

I have win 7, i7 870, GTX 560 Ti, 8 GB Ram DDR 5.

Already using TESV Acceleration Layer (TESVAL)? Instructions and links here: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1324300-tesv-acceleration-layer-offers-massive-possible-performance-increases-now-in-skse-plugin-format-thread-3/

yes try http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1324300-tesv-acceleration-layer-offers-massive-possible-performance-increases-now-in-skse-plugin-format-thread-3/page__view__getnewpost

With fps in the 40s in cities you can be happy anyway. Not sure you will get constant 60 frames

In various laggy areas in towns or outside by forts, it gave me anywhere between a 5 and 15 fps increase :)

I turned down shadow distance in the preferences .ini file. The shadows do "pop" into view because of their view shorter distance, but the ones I see around my character are much better quality:

I changed these lines to these values:

fInteriorShadowDistance=1500.0000
fShadowDistance=2500.0000
iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=4096
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096
iShadowMapResolution=4096

Everything seems to be a trade-off in this game (you can't have your cake and eat it too basically). I'm willing to have that shadow pop with much better close up shadows and better performance in general. I used the TESVAL with a new character up to about level 19, but I kept running into small graphically glitches, companion pathing issues and delays in NPC conversations/reactions to the point I was worried it would permanently screw up the character (even if I removed the mod). Some of those issues may have just been a result of the game's inherent glitchy-ness, but I didn't want to take the chance investing 100+ hours in a character only to discover its broken by a "beta" mod. I will say this, TESVAL does greatly improve FPS on my PC.

It really helps, expect about a 25% gain in FPS over what you're currently seeing in cities or well anywhere else that hits the CPU.

complaining about 45-50 fps in cities? That's still pretty good lol.

As for the acceleration mod, yes it does help. Gave me 5-10 FPS boost.

Why are ppl still using TESVAL?

http://alexander.sannybuilder.com/Files/tes/SkyBoost_r2.zipshould give superior performance. (and doesn't require SKSE)

Trap. Look, if you're going to come out of the blue and suggest something at least post a link to text explaining what it does first.

It still doesn't really say what it *does*, no hits for it on skyrim nexus and the guy's own website doesn't have any mention of it either. I'm familiar with the guy's work but frankly the acceleration layer's author has been very good about documenting what the tool does and even provides source code as well, piggy backing on the acceleration layer tool's threads with random posts does not bode much confidence in me. Well, a valid suggestion for sure but for myself I'll pass on it.

On the linked page there is a link back http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1323303-tesv-acceleration-layer-thread-4/page__st__120on the beth forums, where you'll find the mod discussed & explained.

Again: Randomly jumping into a thread discussing another tool as the only means of 'documenting' something is not exactly a confidence builder. I'll pass.

This is normal for all players, no matter what kind of hardware. Bethesda didn't compile the source code properly before they shipped the game. TESV Acceleration Layer fixes some of the problems... as you now know...

Well SKSE didn't give me anything special so I deleted it. Then I tryed Skybooster. And WOW! It gives me stable 59-60 FPS in Whiterun. Also in Solitude. Riften is a bit tricky. But the game runs totaly better. I just can't belive it. Thanks man!

My virus program blocks access to that link for Skybooster saying its known to transfer malicious software. Is it on Nexus? Can someone linkme to a thread for it or something? I'm curious, but it doesn't seem well publicised compared to the acceleration layer one.

Its a false positive, All those other performance mods didn't work for me, downloaded Skybooster and now I'm getting a constant 50-60 fps in the cities trouble spots, performance is amazing for once So I'm really happy about it.

TESVAL and SkyBoost are basically very similar. They're derived from the same base.

Just that TESVAL requires SKSE and SkyBoost doesn't. Also SkyBoost gives me better performance increase than TESVAL. Try it out and see which one works better for you.
